CLARION (KDKA) - A group of students at Clarion University were set for the opening night of a stage production. Then, they got the news - "the show must not go on."
"We've put in all of this work and can't finish the last section, like nothing is going to get finished," said Courtney Chaplin, the stage manager for the play "Jesus in India."
Clarion University was told to cancel the play by the playwright.
The set hasn't been torn down yet, but the marquee outside Little Theater reads, "This production has been canceled."
The playwright cited "ethnic composition."
Marilouise Michel, Clarion University professor of theater and the play's director, explains what she was told.
"On Monday afternoon, I received an email from the playwright telling me that he demanded that we recast the show with Asian actors or shut down our production," she said.
A lot easier said than done for the primarily white state university.
"We don't have a large population of Asian students at the university," Michel said. "We opened our auditions to all of the students at the university."

May he be resigned to anonymity.
I have frequently heard true Africans who are black cannot stand American blacks citing laziness and crude behavior.
I’m not surprised.
I had a Somalian friend/acquaintance that frequented the gym I worked out in some years ago; he hated American blacks, railing against them as lazy shiftless and entitled. Sound familiar?
I’m thinking this whole thing is a publicity stunt on the part of the playwright and his agent.
Since when does the playwrite get to force a play to be cancelled? Tell him to GFH.
Funny how Michael Jackson had a better grasp of this stuff than the modern crybabies nowadays.
The American blacks tease and taunt them mercilessly for that. But as far as I know, there has been no violence yet.
And as for the white and Asian kids in the school...they just try to make it from class to class without getting involved in too much drama.
I taught at Clarion University of Pennsylvania for a year back in the ‘80s. At that time the students and faculty were almost all white. I do recall one faculty member who was a Muslim from India.
“Well, let me say this. I havenât seen âSpectreâ at this point but in one ad for something or other, it appears that the latest Moneypenny is a young black lady. Moneypenny was NOT black. LOL! Just sayinâ....... So if some director/producer wants to cast an Asian in a particular role, WFC? Theyâre displaying diversity for cryinâ out loud. Oh, sorry, wrong diversity.”
Well, IMO, anyone of any nationality can be cast in any role in any play or musical. Then the potential audience has equal rights; they can choose to go see the play/musical with its chosen ethnic composition, or not. It’s sort of a free county (although that is changing fast), so just like with movies, or political campaigns, the ratings and/or monetary intake will tell the true story.
Generation Snowflake strikes again.
Based on the description of the play:
"...a contemporary take on the lost years of Jesus Christ as a wayward teenager along his journey to the east, complete with punk rock music and drugs..."
Doesn't sound like all that big a loss to me.
from now on Only the race or Culture Group can play a character of that group—Shylock can only be played by a Jew, hitler must be played by a Nazi, Only a Communist can play Stalin, Only a disabled person can play FDR. It gets silly very fast. Only a Gay person can play Oscar Wilde? Ming the Mercyless can only be played by a Chinese (or an actor from Mongo).
Agreed. The “loss” of the cast and crew, is society’s gain.
