Why the Conventional Wisdom Has Been All Wrong This Election Season
National Review ^ | 11/5/2015 | Victor Davis Hanson

The current presidential campaign is blowing up lots of political myths.

For years, the conventional lament was that the "wrong" Bush had run for president in 2000. George W. Bush was supposedly tongue-tied. He was said to be polarizing. He was derided as too much the twangy, conservative Texas Christian.

If only his younger, softer-spoken brother, then–Florida governor Jeb Bush, had run instead!

So the myth went.

Jeb was said to be far more bipartisan and judicious. Jeb, not W., was deemed by many to be the more likable and more competent descendent of their father, former president George H. W. Bush.

The 2015 debates now remind us how false that comparison was. W. may have been more controversial, but he was decisive, unshakeable, charismatic, and connected with crowds in a way the bookish, distracted, and "low-energy" Jeb has not been so far.

For four months, pundits wrote off the flamboyant Donald Trump for his brash name-calling, political inexperience, bombast, over-the-top narcissism — and even his wild, dyed, combed-over hair. But the wheeler-dealer Trump only rose in the polls each time pundits wrote his epitaph.

Why? Trump's candidacy was largely created by underestimated popular outrage over the federal government's politically motivated refusal to enforce immigration law. That issue divides elites, who are not so much affected by their own open-borders advocacy, from the middle classes, who certainly are.

... Illegal immigration sent the Trump candidacy from nowhere to front-runner status - in much the same way that uncontrolled borders have all but imploded the once-popular German chancellor Angela Merkel.

Unfortunately I can’t read the article yet (network erros) but besides (or in addition to) the immigration issue a major reason Trump is doing so well is that more and more people are increasingly seeing the federal government as our enemy.

We believe Trump, with all his brashness, and “who gives a damn” independence, will be willing to bitchslap entire agencies that desperately need to be bitchslapped.

We want the federal jackboot off our necks and Trump is the only one (so far) who has addressed that concern loudly.

Please note that I think Cruz and Carson would also make a good president, but Trump has been loudest and angriest lately, and WE THE PEOPLE are in a very loud and angry mood towards the thugs in DC

Jeb is a lightweight...he stumbles worse than his Brother did; they come from a family who had ties with Hiltler (Prescott Bush, the bank, laundering money); there are still questions about the Saudi money that backed GWB campaign and there are some now with Jeb...

The American people said no more bushes, and we don't want a NWO type government, just like we haven't wanted a Muzlim Brotherhood order being shoved down our throats...

Jeb has re launched now how many times? Plus, he had his campaign right next door to his super pac and they didn't ‘talk’ are we that stupid we are suppose to believe that? Which by the way is against the FEC rules and regulations, but no body has said a word because Jeb isn't going any where, he's done...he need to go home...

The state of our nation today is similar to a pressure cooker with the safety valve locked down.

One reason our founders gave us protected free speech is that they knew and understood the need for people to express their displeasure over anything bothering them. Allowing people to vent is a way of releasing pressure.

The left and their friends in the media have pretty much effectivly shut down free speech, and free association, which would be enough to get people angry.

Add to that the open borders allowing millions in from other cultures who upon arrival immediately demand we meet their needs and honor their culture while at the same time attempting to destroy ours.

Add to this the social changes that the American people clearly did not want, unlimited abortion, same sex marriages, and putting the “rights” of very sexual deviant ahead of everyone else even to the point of the Federal Government suing school district to allow boys to shower with young girls.

Add to all this, even when the people manage to win an election, the politicians immediately forget who put them there and continue business as usual.

And last, even when the people go to the poll and vote for something, if it is something the left does not like, they either ignore the results, or go to court and some judge rules against the people.

The American people no longer feel those that are governing them are listening to what they have to say. They are angry, very angry. The political class can not understand that anger, so they pretend it is just a small “extreme” portion of the country that are angry.

Like him or hate him, Trump is giving those Americans a voice.

No one can predict the future, but I would suspect that if the establishment somehow finds a way to shut Trump out the pressure cooker may explode with unknown consequences.

I don't believe that, but I understand why many people do.

Here's the thing, DT and Carson have had nothing to do with our national debt or the condition our country is now in - that's on the "experienced" politicians. I think people are finally realizing that if we keep electing "experienced" folks, we're going to keep getting more of the same results. Unlike the current pResident, DT doesn't think he knows everything. But he knows who best to place in charge of certain tasks - then he will hold them accountable.

How many times have you heard some politician "take responsibility" for a problem, and then no consequences are delivered? I believe, regarding DT, that his "you're fired" refrain lurks in the back of peoples' heads.

Sometimes the job really does require a hammer. Trump appears to be the biggest hammer available.
