Houston Mayor Annise Parker wasnât exactly gracious in defeat, accusing those who opposed the cityâs transgender-rights ordinance of âdeliberate liesâ and predicting the cityâs economy would suffer as a result of the measureâs repeal.
In remarks shortly after Tuesdayâs balloting, Ms. Parker blamed the Houston Equal Rights Ordinanceâs lopsided loss on âa very small but determined group of right-wing ideologues and the religionist rightâ for waging âa campaign of fear-mongering and deliberate lies.â
The ordinance, named Proposition 1 on the city ballot, lost by 62 to 38 percent despite the strong support of national gay-rights organizations, who poured millions into the local campaign, as well as pro-business groups.
âAnd truly, unfortunately, I fear that this will have stained Houstonâs reputation as a tolerant, welcoming global city, and I absolutely fear that there will be a direct economic backlash as a result of this ordinance going into defeat,â Ms. Parker said in a video posted on KHOU-TV. âAnd thatâs sad for Houston and sad for all of us.â
The ordinance, passed by city council in 2014, gave protected class status based on 15 characteristics, including race, ethnicity, gender, age and religion, as well as sexual orientation and gender identity. Most of those are already listed under federal and state law.

Wow, 0.001% - 2% of the population might get angry.
All democrats should boycott the evacuation of bowels until this is corrected.
And I predict she's dead wrong on the backlash part and that it is wishful thinking. Most of the business that comes to Houston is via oil....and they will be here...HERO or no HERO.
Transgender tycoons will refrain from locating their industries to Houston! Houston cannot survive economically without them.
Careful they pack a wicked right with their purses and boas.
I am hesitant to guess how that city’s economy could possibly be hurt....by the defeat of such madness.
they get a of of tourists from San Francisco perhaps??...
I work in Houston. Many of our clients are pretty big businesses. Many of them have told us that if this crap would have passed they would move out of the city.
Mayor Anus Porker is an idiot.
Great post! ROFL!
boycott the evacuation of bowels
Democrats are already full of $h1t.
Actually, the entire “anti discrimation” sexual deviant ordinace was defeated which is wonderful.
Annise Parker : why does our society insist on electing disgusting people like this , to have authority over us ?
THis is why I have broken with mainstream Bible teaching ;
I am sorry , I just CANNOT respect such perfidious power holders . Society has come off the tracks , It’s time for rebellion , not kow-towing
Right... a backlash because some pervert guy cannot use a girls bathroom. Yeah, I see him launching a boycott campaign post-haste...
BUMP!
That vomit alert is dead on the mark.
Were they part of the government study as to why lesbians are overweight?
They are already full and risk rectal explosion.
This sounds like something from a "Beavis & Butthead" episode.
Economic backlash? Because confused perverts are such a huge percentage of the population.
