People keep stating “defeat devices”, this was a software function, not a device in the true sense of the term.
Oversimplifications like this drive me a bit batty.

Anyone out there believe that VW was the only automaker doing this?
When CAFE standards come up against the limits of the Laws of Thermodynamics, something’s gotta give.

This makes me want to buy a VW !!

Anyone out there believe that GM Volt’s biggest fan isn’t using the full might of US espionage to hurt its competitors?

The perfect combustion of hydrocarbons in an oxygen atmosphere results in water and carbon dioxide.
HC+O2=H2O+CO2
It is impossible to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide without reducing the amount of hydrocarbon burned, while at the same time keeping the amount of nitrous oxides low.

Didn't I read some where that VW's only us (non-union)manufacturing plant in the US was facing some kind of union vote this week?
A little applied vote thuggery maybe?

Oh please...the biggest polluter coming out of Germany is Merkel.
Still, if some greener wants to dump his/her/it's evil TDI for pennies on the dollar, I'll sacrifice my health and take the smoke-filled cancer-cart off their hands.

Don’t Democrats also release carbon dioxide?

I had a 2000 VW Jetta. One time the Check Engine light started flashing. When the light is flashing and not full On it indicates an emission problem.
I took the car to the dealer and they told me one of the emission variables had exceeded the set limit. They told me there was a TSB from VW that instructed them to update the ECU software to change the limit.
I forget exactly when this happened but the car was probably about 8 years old with at least 60K miles on it when this happened.
Over time I think we will find this problem goes way back and affects almost every VW sold for a very long time.

Irrelevant since there are ways of after treatment that reduces NOx to specified levels, which is the industry standard.

So now that CO2 has been declared a poisonous gas we need to root out all sources.

Volkswagen cars are so behind the times technology-wise. The 2015 Passat is where others were 10 years ago. When I was looking for a retirement car, VW wasn't even on my radar, nor did I waste my time test driving one.
