WASHINGTON â Nearly 168,000 pounds of ground beef is being recalled due to potential E. coli contamination.
Federal food safety inspectors found the bacteria in meat that was packaged by All American Meats in Omaha, Neb., prompting regulators to issue a recall on Sunday for a massive batch of the companyâs products that may also be affected.
The ground beef items were produced on Oct. 16, 2015. The following products are subject to recall:
80-lb. (approximate weight) boxes of âGround Beef 80% Lean 20% Fat (Fine Grind)â with Sell By Date 11-03-2015 and case code 62100.
80-lb. (approximate weight) boxes of âGround Beef 73% Lean 27% Fat (Fine Grind)â with Sell By Date 11-03-2015 and case code 60100.
60-lb. (approximate weight) boxes of âGround Beef Round 85% Lean 15% Fat (Fine Grind)â with Sell By Date 11-03-2015 and case code 68560.
60-lb. (approximate weight) boxes of âGround Beef Chuck 81% Lean 19% Fat (Fine Grind)â with Sell By Date 11-03-2015 and case code 68160.
60-lb. (approximate weight) boxes of âGround Beef Chuck 81% Lean 19% Fat (Fine Grind)â with Sell By Date 11-03-2015 and case code 63130.
80-lb. (approximate weight) boxes of âGround Beef Chuck 81% Lean 19% Fat (Fine Grind)â with Sell By Date 11-03-2015 and case code 63100.
The USDA said the beef was shipped all over the country. The packages also include the establishment number âEST. 20420â on the USDA mark of inspection. See what the labels look like here.
Regulators said no illnesses linked to the meat had been reported at the time the recall was issued.
âConsumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,â the USDA said in a press release. âThese products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.â
E. coli â the same bacteria that led Chipotle to close dozens of restaurants over the weekend â is potentially lethal. It causes dehydration and digestion issues and can lead to kidney failure. Symptoms include âbruising, pallor, and decreased urine output,â officials said.
Itâs unclear how the contamination may have occurred. All American Meats did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Guess we don’t get to know which supermarkets were affected here...
I’d also recommend grass-fed dairy products for the same reason. And pasteurized, not ultra-pasturized. Ultra pasteurization destroys the milk protein, rending it just a big glass of empty calories.
AFAIK, the individual stores that carry this meat haven’t been identified yet. Don’t ask me why. Makes no sense to me. That information is supposed to be forthcoming soon.
Apparently the contaminated product was distributed nationwide from a plant in Omaha. Since we bought some ground beef the other day, we couldn’t wait to find out. So I called the supermarket where we shop and asked them. They said all their beef is sourced in California, so we’re in the clear. Suggest you do the same. Don’t take a chance. Cheers!
Are regular consumers not to worry as we usually do not buy 80# boxes of ground beef? No mention of whether this beef was sold in grocery stores in smaller quantities.
I stopped at my office the other day and one of my colleagues told me that the Safeway next door got a double shipment of beef. Ground beef was $.99 a pound.
I grabbed 20 lbs and a big tray of pork chops for $24
I searched the internet for more info. Nothing so we called the store that we bought 6# of ground beef on Saturday. They said their meat wasn’t part of the recall. This was a Piggly Wiggly store in WI.
Potentially of interest to you both:
I have been marinating all store bought beef and pork in soy sauce and garlic for the past five years. If I get grass fed or grain fed from a rancher, I trust the meat.
Finally, the up side to not being able to afford even 73% ground beef.
My best price was for 73% lean ground beef was $2.20/lb for a ten pound unit. I have a freezer to put it in so I can buy it in bulk. Every time I hear ground beef was recalled because of e coli, I am thinking these meat processors are getting so big they become more vulnerable to quality control mistakes and cutting corners trying to save production costs. It is a big gamble because it makes them vulnerable to big mistakes that will cost them big even when they do have insurance (insurance rates will go up). The money they think they will save cutting corners will bite them. And people like me will see the cost of the product go up to the roof.

Info should show up here when available
Thank you!
The meat was packed on Oct. 16. November 3rd was the last day it should have been sold as fresh.
