Kim Farry has amassed an enviable wardrobe. Leather jackets and designer dresses jostle for space at her London flat, alongside a shoe collection stored in boxes that stretch from floor to ceiling.

Looking at this wardrobe, you’d presume Kim is a successful businesswoman or married to someone rich. Wrong on both counts. In fact, this unmarried 54-year-old woman obtained all these clothes from shoplifting. And not just the occasional theft, but part of a criminal haul over 45 years.

Kim started stealing aged nine and, by her own shameless reckoning (which may or may not be accurate), she has accrued goods to the value of more than £2 million. On top of that, Kim was claiming state benefits, which paid for her former home, a nice three-bedroom property in Teddington, Middlesex.

And there’s more. The mother of six has recently been on TV to talk about her life of crime. She claims that she has changed her ways and is, finally, looking for a job. But her vow to go straight has a catch. For Kim to be kept in the manner to which she is accustomed, she says she won’t take

‘Why should I go without? I’m not going to go round looking like a tramp. It’s part of being a girl, isn’t it, pampering yourself?’ she says. ‘I want at least £800 a week or I might as well stay on benefits.

..In addition, she has her children to consider. There are six — by four different fathers. All are adults, apart from the youngest, 15-year-old Paris, who lives with her.
