Recognition would define native Hawaiians as a separate political entity - protecting many of the federal programmes currently provided to native Hawaiians, like favourable housing loans, a land trust programme, health care, educational and cultural grants.
It would also allow for an element of economic independence, although one industry that has enriched a few Native American tribes - gambling - is banned in Hawai'i.

No, use the cash to build an effective wall all along our southern border with minefields in between the fence rows. Stop the current invasion cold.
We were stationed in Hawaii a long time ago and try to visit when we can. We just got back from Hawaii 10 days ago. I’m guessing not quite 50% of the population are Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Samoans.... There are not many true Hawaiians, maybe 12%. A friend of ours is a high percentage Hawaiian and gets lots of benefits and privileges. She’s X Air Force and worked with my husband at stratcom. Not only do they have financial benefits, they, have an some kind of agreement with some businesses for extra privileges. We went to Dukes at the outrigger hotel and she got us a front row table at the last minute to see Kapono (Cecilio and Kapono were big in the 70’s). She got my husband a free tshirts...our dinner was discounted...true Hawaiians can buy land really cheap. It’s a great place to visit, and special to me because my middle son was born at Tripler, but I wouldn’t like to live there. Christmas was very depressing there.
You're obviously hitting the wrong parts of Florida.
Why not? He's effectively our king, not our President.
Not full blooded, very rare. And very poor.
The money here is Japanese and Chinese ancestry. They run things.
Same as I feel about the entire northeast.
Well he could care less its not like he was born ther
Dittoes. Especially new England.
You've never experienced excitement until you've spent time in Manhattan.Hop on a plane and I'll show you around! ;-)
“We are a horrible occupying oppressive people”
But not for long! The people of color are procreating, white folks aren’t. They will use their genitals to take over with out firing a shot (metaphorically speaking).
“Ever heard of Florida? You can drive there.A decent hotel room can be found for less than $300/night and gas is $2.15/gal rather than $3.50. “
Not for us West Coat folks. Plus you’re not nearly so likely to get shot in Hawaii as you are in FL. FL is the biggest hog at the federal trough by a wide measure. Florida takes more federal dollars than any state in the union and gives almost nothing back. But from what I’ve seen in Hawaii, they are probably a close second as a “kept” state.
Hawaii as a US state is the best thing to happen for everyone.
The native Hawaiian population was a minority in the 1890s and most people didn’t want to live under the Queen — who did’t know how to develop the economy.
The people voted by 93 percent to become a US state and have benefited tremendously ever since.
No native land was lost from the native Hawaiians (except for the US Military installations). The vast tracks of land owned by the monarchy was simply made state lands. No Hawaiian had land taken from them.
Compare the economy of Hawaii with the poverty stricken Pacific Island nations. Everyone’s lives have improved.
The missionaries preserved the language by creating a written alphebet that made it easy for English speakers to learn.
The Kapu system of the native Hawaiians was brutal, sexist and violent.
Western influence gave the Hawaiians the music that they enjoy. The Ukulele came from Portuguese workers. Before gospel music all the native people had was a few stone age chants.
Turning Hawaii over to the native people would be like returning South Dakota over to the Sioux tribes.
Idiotic. But, since liberals are in charge look for it to happen.
At one time it made strategic sense. But with a nuclear Navy, it doesn’t any more. I say set them free and be rid of the Liberal seats in the Bouse and Senate.
Enough with the special privileges given to one ethnicity and not to another!
Nope. We settled that issue before joining the United States.
Virtual today, de facto if they "win".
I'd be happy to give them everything except Oahu so long as ethnic Hawaiians were required to have a passport from their government to even visit "American Oahu".
Yep. Just like Puerto Rico. And the Samoa’s.
Oh I’m quoting. Texas is most certainly US
I don’t know about the gambling but I do know they can’t make a fake birth certificate worth a dang. Terrible liars too.
I spent 2 years there when in the Navy. After 6 months I was bored to tears. You can only go around the island so many times and they don’t have ferries to go from island to island.
Great place to visit though. Post card picturesque. Just bring your really really big wallet. That was 35 years ago. I can only imagine what the prices are like now.
Except for the tourist areas, the rest of the place is a 3rd world cesspool.
