IIRC that's why he stopped touring in the first place.
A drummer friend of mine said that Collins' posture was so awful for all those years, that it was no wonder he messed up his back.

Phil hadn’t even drummed full-time on tour since Peter Gabriel left, he would drum during the Instrumental parts of songs.
Amazing stuff watching Phil and Bill Bruford together during the Trick of the Tail tour.
