Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) won the first round of votes for the job of House Speaker, but 45 Republican legislators voted against him.
Those 45 members are enough to block him from getting the Speakership during the partisan floor vote on Thursday if the 45 GOP legislators maintain their opposition, and if Ryan is not aided by a last-minute bloc of Democratic votes.
During the closed-door conference, Ryan won just 200 votes for the nomination. Former Florida House Speaker Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL) earned a whopping 43 votes. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)who isnt officially running for Speakerreceived one vote. House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who dropped out of the Speakership race a couple weeks ago, got one vote as well.
The failure on Ryans part to win 218 votesthe threshold for anyone to win the Speakership on the House floor assuming every member of the House is present and voting for a personis a major embarrassment on his part.
The question now becomes whether Ryan will be able to get at 18 of the 45 Republican votes he lost to get behind him on the floor on Thursday. If he cant succeed by the first ballot, the election could go to a second ballot on the floorwhich would likely lead to Ryan’s demise.

Let the Rino’s have their Speaker with the Stain of dhimmi votes. That will keep the proper perspective on things during the election cycle to keep the people’she memory aflame.
He said he was happy with Ways and Means.
He said he didn’t really want the speaker job unless every one of his peers gave him a unanimous standing ovation, carried him on their shoulders shouting Huzzah! over-and-over and sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” three times in a row ...
That ain’t gonna happen, but hey, he wants the job anyway.
So we’re off to a good start with Orange-Man’s Mini-me.
Hurrah! Elect Dan Webster!
We’ll see soon enough. This smells, looks, and sounds like kabuki theater prior to the Grand Kneepad Procession planned for tomorrow.
Anyone that doesn’t think Ryan was part of budget & debt limit deal is a fool.
Let’s see how those 45 vote tomorrow. There will not be 20 that vote against Ryan then.
Didn’t Ryan say he would only take the job with unified House GOP support?? (and no conditions?)
Well this is a rejection Paul.
Walk away, no run away.
What a phony!
Oh, she’d be one of the first ones to get shaved. The whole rotted, kleptocratic post-war order is close to collapse. There is not much left to steal, of either wealth or freedom. They are all ancien regime.
Je sui Defarge.
He’ll need Dems to vote, so the tax purse is open....................
I think there is information on Gowdy we haven’t found yet, something had to have happened for him to turn like this all of a sudden, right after Kevin McCarthy stepped down as speaker position....but I can’t find it, and I have looked!!!
Exactly! Imagine what we could accomplish if they took this no compromise, no retreat, no almost with our enemies instead of with us.
Someone finally gets it.
Welcome to the coup. It happened while we were all wishfully thinking that voting the GOP into power would stop us from being fundamentally transformed into a Marxist/Fascist tyranny.
We failed to understand that the coup was completed and all of our reps are being given offers they cannot refuse.
They know where the power is going to lie - and they will do everything they can to share in it.
Really?
Get back to me if they actually don’t elect him.
rINO is an over used term. Try Republican Statist. It is very accurate.
honestly I am amazed. I thought the fix was in..
Still might be but this slows him down.
They are likely playing some pre-scripted game and it is all decided already.
Someone finally gets it.

Folks should break out some Solzhenitsyn works like the Gulag Archipelago and read just a few pages to understand the very people like Hitlary and Zer0 are the Bolsheviks who hated the Tsarists...once in power they are the new Tsarists who have all the money and power and they believe they give the people their rights. Anyone other than maybe Trump, Cruz and Carson (Cruz #1, Trump #2, Carson #3) would take our rights away. Any candidate who does not think God gives rights should be feared...this is why I hesitate a bit on Trump.
