They didn’t even consider whether there could be genetic differences between the races. That's where I thought the study was going when I first read the headline. It could be that it was an advantage in the northern hemisphere for people who were able to sleep through those long, cold winter nights where winter food was scarce - the more they slept, the fewer calories were required. People in warmer regions with lots of food - and predators - probably were more likely to survive if they slept lightly.
