Open borders fanatics like Gutierrez would like the country to be utterly overrun by illegals (I assume preferably by Mexicans), as if it isn't overrun already. But he misses the reason that this country has become such an attractant to illegal as well as legal immigrants, and that is the progress it has made as a sovereign nation peopled by individuals who were part of a distinct American culture, a culture which achieved the greatest prosperity, freedom, and standard of living in history. And it didn't achieve it by having open borders and a dilution of its culture by people who had no interest in assimilation, and who, if they wanted citizenship, wanted it for the benefits it would bring them not because they embraced being Americans.

The bottom line is that the unfettered influx of such unassimilable people that Gutierrez pushes only brings the day closer to the end of what attracted immigrants of all stripes to the USA in the first place, and the transformation of the USA into a giant Mexico with all that implies.
