Vandal throws bag of biological waste in Bay Area market

NOVATO — Northern California authorities arrested a man suspected of tossing a bag full of feces, urine, paint and rubbing alcohol at a grocery store's meat counter.

Police said Monday that officers arrested 45-year-old Charles Nishi at a homeless encampment in Novato, which is about 30 miles north of San Francisco.

Novato police said a hazardous material crew responded to the Harvest Market at about 5 p.m. Sunday to clean up the mess, which prompted the store to close earlier than usual.

Police are investigating whether Nishi is the same person who got into a dispute with store workers Saturday. Nishi was booked into jail on suspicion of felony vandalism, unlawful release of offensive matter at a business, unlawful dumping of waste matter on private property and possession of suspected methamphetamine.

No doubt that this is nasty but is it really hazardous? Clearly all the meat must go and everything disinfected but is it any worse than this guy having an accident in the men's room?

Not long ago some chlorine and acid fell of a pool service truck and the fire department responded with a hazmat team in full regalia. It was overkill in my book. Had they hosed it all down it would not been any worse than someone draining their pool. Everything is treated as though it is highly reactive plutonium.

“Clearly all the meat must go”

I’m thinking that was the objective all along.

Yes, but the meth wasn’t considered hazardous.

My mom moved us down to California at the start of my Junior year... I still consider moving out of this liberal hellhole of a town 3 days after I graduated from high school among my best choices in life!

unlawful release of offensive matter at a business

I don't like creepy & highly subjective rules/laws/charges such as this, just the kind of thing that could be used to stop your BBQ or pig roast...

It's probably the paint component in the bag that pissed them off. The paint could be lead-based paint which of course will kill you on contact.

Actually, feces is *worse* now, because of the now more than a dozen common antibiotic resistant bacteria strains.

To explain, fecal bacteria, sometimes called coliform bacteria, while good in our lower intestines, can make you very sick elsewhere in the body. And when they have become antibiotic resistant, they may not be arrested before they have severely injured or even killed you.

So 25 years ago, what he did was just gross and criminal damage; today it represents a tangible biological threat. Not only is all that meat forfeit, but every surface the filth or spatter might have touched must be sanitized.

The man himself is likely covered with contamination, so he threatens everything he touches with conveying aggravated assault.

Alcohol has to be at 60% or better to work as a disinfectant. He probably splashed some in and thought it protected him from serious prosecution.

Yes. Lots of nasty things in poopie perhaps more than now. If that is so, why can someone use the restroom in a grocery store? Shouldn’t the hazmat team decontaminate them? How can mom change the baby’s diapers in the car and then enter the store? If the toilet breaks in Safeway, should the shut it down? How can the plumber or Roto Rooter man be allowed to shop there?

I agree. Very nasty maybe more nasty but it does not require a hazmat team.
