China's Foreign Ministry reacted angrily Tuesday after a U.S. Navy ship passed within 12 nautical miles of disputed islands in the South China Sea late Monday in an apparent challenge to Beijing's territorial claims in the region.

The ministry said that authorities monitored and warned the guided missile destroyer USS Lassen as it moved inside what China claims as a 12-mile territorial limit around Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands archipelago, a disputed group of hundreds of reefs, islets, atolls and islands in the South China Sea that is also claimed by the Philippines.

We are having this confrontation BECAUSE Obama is a weak president. Everybody beat up on GWB for acting tough. Act tough and you don’t have to use force. Act like a metrosexual and you will get America’s *ss kicked. That’s the problem with not allowing boys to be boys on the ball field. They don’t learn how the world really works.

Is the wise to risk war on another front when Europe, northern Africa and the Mideast are such a mess? Add to that the US is already under invasion form the south, most likely to have crazies from the Mideast taking advantage of that.

Is it deliberate destruction of civilization as we know it? Maybe overconfidence by the elite in their ability to control outcomes? Or utter stupidity?

Must be a great feeling for our Navy to know that the only reason they are in the region is to “prove” Sparky the Wunder CIC has a set, knowing full well they are only a pawn that will be required to withdraw the nanosecond Sparky’s alleged set suck back up into his vagina. What a despicable vile POS we have infested the White House...

You’ve got that entirely backwards. U.S. allies and the U.S. military backed Obama in a corner by insisting upon a Freedom of Navigation (FON) operation. The United States has been conducting these FON operations ever since there has been a U.S. Navy. In the beginning these missions were performed to gain more international recognition of the independence of the United States as a sovereign nation, and to protect U.S. merchant shipping. Today, the FON missions are still protecting national and international maritime shipping and aviation. This is a mission which is supposed to be preformed regardless of which President is in office at the moment. The fact such a mission has not been conducted since 2012 suggests Obama has been resisting his Defense, Navy, State, and allied advisors.

We aren’t risking war in this situation...

China is flexing their muscles...

Obama is sending China a weak message, he knows no other...

Basically, it’s a howdy, we know what you are doing...

We aren’t going to do jack about it...continue your expansion

World leaders don’t respect Obama, they know hes incompetent and weak and will not fight for his own nations interests, hes a useful tool to extract more power for themselves on the world stage, making for very dangerous times,

Its only the republicans in Congress that fear him,

I had to scroll down a ways before finding your post. Thanks for explaining this.

FON IS a big deal. WWI was pretty much about this. Without Pearl Harbor it would have been our reason for getting into the ETO in WWII.

A SINGLE DESTROYER and NOTHING like this at all for THREE years...??

This was juuust a scripted, minimalist, reluctant, pre-announced gesture completely aimed at formally attending to patching up political appearances.

“The US is committed to Asian trading allies and freedom of the seas”.

What kind of secret deal does he have with China..?

“You guys let us outwardly bluster every now and then, and we`ll let you bully boats at sea and we`ll patrol WAAAAY further away...”

If he MEANT it he would have sent a carrier group, but he doesnt and every one else in Asia knows it, too.

What happens when FOS patrols of actual substance in the South China Sea are left to JAPAN...??

Rest assured this single ship was Kabuki.

Puuuuure gesture, and an empty one.

The US says that under UNCLOS, China can't claim 12 mile territorial seas on man made islands, which is why the navy went within 12 miles.

There are also disputes with China over the EEZ with China claiming certain authorities over their EEZ that are not granted by UNCLOS

“Yeah, Bush was a MONSTAH when the Chicoms forced down that plane. Yup, he scared the msg out of them.”

What most people don’t understand is China is not a nation under one leader like the other nations. The president of China is like the head of a homeowners association. He has to negotiate with the Red Generals, who own the country. The general who had the US Navy people OWNED the base they were at. He owned all the roads, factories and technology in his district. Bush never had contact with him. The president of China had to negotiate with what is essentially a modern war lord. That was a situation where soft diplomacy worked. As a matter of fact, it was the only diplomacy possible.

I do not disagree with your assessment.

But to suggest that Bush was “harsh” on anyone after April 2003 is just wrong.

He did not win the wars. He tried to build a nation.

He dismissed thousands of years of history, thinking his NeoCon way of thinking was better than the Greeks, Persians, Ottomans, British, and Russians.

Trying to play down the middle with the Chinese might be a good plan. And I respect that.
