Right after the May 17 motorcycle-gang shootout in Waco, this newspaper’s inclination was to believe law enforcers’ account that the nine deaths and 22 injuries were the result of hardened criminal thugs waging a deadly turf battle. But the longer this bizarre case plays out, the more credible the bikers look, and the more it appears that McLennan County officials have something to hide.

How long does it take to caliper/mike out the bullets recovered, weigh the fragments, and determine preliminary ballistics data, anyway? (None has been released yet).

Not long at all. If the slugs are highly fragmented you can bet they came from rifles. There are exceptions to some specialty handgun cartridges that will fragment such as power-ball ammo. With power-ball the lead is intact but highly mushroomed. The metal jacket is designed to peal away and it makes some ugly cutting edges. However the base is relatively not deformed and easily miked to determine caliber.

My suspicion is that we will get to the conclusion of two of the court episodes with guilty episodes, then start to reach a point where the wounds or bullets relate to a cop’s gun and the remaining cases all fail. A court review will come back to the original convictions and they end up being tossed out.

I do agree....a lot of shooting took place and cops apparently were firing as well.
