Story Highlights

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' support for the Tea Party has dropped to its lowest level since the movement emerged on the national political scene prior to the 2010 midterm elections. Seventeen percent of Americans now consider themselves Tea Party supporters, and a record 54% say they are neither supporters nor opponents.

Trend: Do you consider yourself to be [a supporter of the Tea Party movement, an opponent of the Tea Party movement] or neither?

The Tea Party emerged in 2009 in opposition to the fledgling Obama administration, and many Americans took sides for or against the movement in the midterm elections the next year. Support peaked at 32% in November 2010, just after those elections, in which Tea Party supporters were widely credited with helping the Republican Party gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tea Party Support in U.S.

As support gradually eroded over the next year, opponents of the Tea Party gained the upper hand and have led supporters in all 10 Gallup polls measuring views of the movement since the start of 2012. Since August 2012, support has failed to reach 25%, and it has fallen below 20% in each of the last two polls.

Meanwhile, opposition peaked at 31% just ahead of last year's midterm elections, but has dropped to 24% in the most recent Gallup poll, conducted Oct. 7-11.

Politics and Ideology Drive Support, Opposition

Support for and opposition to the Tea Party movement have been consistently divided along ideological and political lines over the last five years, with Republicans and conservatives the biggest supporters, and Democrats and liberals the strongest opponents.

I like the way you think. The Tea Party is just one branch that deals with the legal issues and legislation that affects the Constitution. The others are covert...: )

I just thought of something.
The original “Tea Party” was only the beginning of the story.

Hey Gallup, I haven't heard about the marxist, muslim, mulatto’s approval rating in a long time. Did you stop that polling too?

Many of the voters are obviously more interested in keeping the flow of debt going, especially federal pork to the various locales. They’re cheering for an invasion of entertainment celebrities and global corporate bosses in the Executive branch.

I spoke to another Tea Party group over the weekend. Very small turnout. You might say, "It's you," except it was an all day event and I was only one of three speakers.

Mostly an older crowd, too. I felt energy go out of the Tea Party in 2010. That doesn't mean they don't vote, but the "Freedom groups" that sprang up have shrunk or disappeared.

You are correct about this. The Tea Party served its purpose which was to educate and inform a large number of non-political people. But it is silly to argue that it has the vim or vitality it had four years ago. I speak at these meetings all the time and they have steadily shrunk.

What Tea Party? I see no evidence of a Tea Party.

The IRS killed the Tea Party and the GOP approves 100%

Yup. Contracted hit.

Which tells us what we are now: feudal serfs working for a self selecting aristocracy, now known as "bureaucrats".

They don't work for us anymore.

Other way around.

Sure - say that you are a member of Tea Party and get the Lois Lerner IRS special 'attention'...

I'd not identify myself as such to any polling Group.

That said, I don't think I ever would've called myself a 'member' -- because it never was a real Party. I agree with their fiscal positions - but I don't think they took any positions regarding social positions (e.g., opposition to the Sodomite Lobby; Pro-Life; Pro-Christian), which I rank as more important issues.

I suspect it has something to do with the “Tea Party” going Washington. After all, when “Tea Party” elected officials act just like inside-the-beltway politicos, as many of them have, it tends to disillusion people.

Tea Party delivers record election victory in 2014 after their support allegedly eroded by half since 2010? Something seems off.
