Republicans have fended off accusations for years that they'd gut Medicare for seniors and end the program "as we know it."
Not Ben Carson. The former neurosurgeon acknowledges he would abolish the program altogether.
Carson, who now leads the GOP field in Iowa according to the latest Quinnipiac Poll, would eliminate the program that provides health care to 49 million senior citizens, as well as Medicaid, and replace it with a system of cradle-to-grave savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions. While rivals have been pummeled for proposing less radical changes, Carson hasn't faced the same scrutiny -- and his continued traction in polls has left GOP strategists and conservative health care wonks scratching their heads.
"This isnt a borderline issue. The politics of this are horrific," said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the American Action Forum and health care adviser to Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

If we had a real, open, free-market, free-choice medical system and market, prices would drop through the floor.
Right now, we have a proto-fascist system of strict government control of all supply and dispersement, with insiders able to game the system, as long as they promote governments politics and policies. Of course, its expensive and its getting worse.
i would suggest that details of such a plans implementation are VITAL at this point
That sounds good to me .. that way I could choose the doctors I want to see, instead of having to choose a set of doctors I’m not really confident can really take care of me.
Well, he’s right that Medicare is the cause of Obamacare, and that unless/until Medicare is abolished we cannot have a real Federal budget OR a limited government.
See, this is why I don't care for Carson. He has no concept of true liberty or the proper role of the federal government.
Medicare and Medicaid should be abolished. Let the states help seniors and those who are disabled, and because they can't print money, they will look for ways to innovate, such as letting private insurance bid on contracts and charity organizations assist.
I think this is going to hurt his campaign. And it might hurt the republicans by association.
HOORAY Carson
Medicare was cut by Obama to fund his Obamacare.
Of course the liberal socialist are not to blame entirely for turning this government from its constitutional restrictions into this out of control communist government, the GOPe RINO’s helped in a big way with the support of corporation's like the Chamber of Communist (crony capitalist) who have sold out this Constitutional Republic in order to insure their bottom line, e.g. Obamacare, support for illegal immigration, and this out of control federal departments e.g. EPA, Department of Education, etc.
It is refreshing to read about a real conservative candidate who wants to reduce the size of this government and bring it back under the limitations placed on it (the government) by we the people!!!
Mr. Carson would be a great US President and I would support him if he won the primary!!
Never will ever support another RINO GOPe under any circumstance EVER!!!
You've got that right. Carson might be correct, in theory. But most folks on Medicare aren't in the mood to gamble with their health care. They'll take the devil they know, so to speak.
You think 108 dollars a month for 80 percent coverage is a lot of money. And you really think you will find something cheaper? Good luck but I seriously doubt it.
They will need to change their panties once this happens. Maybe the American people can set up a go fund me account to send your favorite socialist to a country of their choice with the understanding they can never return to the United States again never! It is a one time one way trip!!!
Problem solved!!!!!!
Carson is now finished.
I agree.
The waste, abuse, and overuse in Medicare is horrendous.
Medicare is a mess. I worked in the social services system for 15 years as a private contractor. He is right about the problem, not sure about his solution.
But, you are right, he just shot himself in the foot because people will not think it through.
Yes. He’s dead to me.
I hope so.
Let's just pray that conservative GOPers aren't finished along with him due to his dumb, ill-thought-out proposal.
He's perceived (wrongly) as being a conservative. Folks may think he's speaking for all conservatives. This dunderhead doesn't have a clue what to bring up and what not to bring up in a primary.

“...savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions.”
And when the accounts go south, the govey is on the hook again. Hmmm. Savings and Loan scandal redo?
