It happened once. 1848, Whig Z Taylor won a plurality in a 3-way race that he would have lost if it was a two-way race and the Whigs lost a FEW seats which cost them the TINY House majority they had won in 1846.
I’ll repeat. Dem House majority in 2016 is impossible by any other means than sizeable Dem POTUS coatails, Dem +5 for a Senate Majority is quite unlikely without Dem Potus coatails.

No. They won’t be voting Democrat. There is another choice, you know. Don’t vote for either. One is not required to vote for anyone. Again, why would a conservative vote for a Democrat or for someone he believes to be a Democrat who claims to be a Republican? Why vote when the guy you vote for will be the same as the Republicans have been since Bush? I won’t vote for a Democrat but if the Republicans in Congress don’t turn around their performance very soon I won’t vote for a Republican either. Voting in the USA has, unlike voting in Iraq or Bengal or Sudan, not historically been a tribal phenomenon in which one votes for the candidate ethnically and genetically closest to oneself with no other reason to vote.
Besides, what good is a Republican majority when they take their direction from Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi? That is essentially why Republicans lost the majorities they had with Bush. There are almost no conservatives in DC, no matter how many we send there.
