Latest polls cause GOP establishment to think the unthinkable
MSNBC ^ | 10/20/2015 | Steve Benen

For three months, we’ve all heard all kinds of assumptions about Donald Trump’s Republican presidential campaign. He’d peaked. His act had worn thin. His lead was simply unsustainable. And yet, the latest polling continues to speak for itself. Consider the results of the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey, released last night.

1. Donald Trump: 25% (up four points from September) 2. Ben Carson: 22% (up two points) 3. Marco Rubio: 13% (up two points) 4. Ted Cruz: 9% (up four points) 5. Jeb Bush: 8% (up one point) 6. Carly Fiorina: 7% (down four points)

The remaining candidates are at 3% or lower, including Chris Christie, who has seen his support steadily drop in recent months, falling to just 1% in this poll. Trump’s 25% showing, meanwhile, represents the strongest support any GOP candidate has in any NBC/WSJ poll this year.

A new CNN poll offers similar results:

1. Donald Trump: 27% (up three points from September) 2. Ben Carson: 22% (up eight points) 3. Jeb Bush: 8% (down one point) 3. Marco Rubio: 8% (down three points)

The remaining candidates are at 5% or lower. Fiorina, in particular, has seen her standing collapse, dropping from 15% to 4% in the CNN poll just over the course of one month. Regardless, the burning question in Republican circles is starting to shift from “When will Trump falter?” to “What if he doesn’t?”

Cruz wants 500% more H1-Bs than we now have.

Trump says that sort of thinking must stop.

Trump wants the wall. Has Cruz said he will build it?

Trump never said people reapply and become citizens. They can apply for the first time to be let back in to work or visit. Not to become citizens.

Again, as a matter of perspective— which seems irrelevant in this thread— Trump WANTS a lot of things that the base wants.

What has Trump done that leads you to believe he would do what is WANTED?

Take the immigration issue. Somehow, the mere fact that Trump says inflammatory things seems to suggest to his supporters that he will do something dramatic.

Cruz on the other hand has some pretty impressive actions.

The most important is that he defeated the Bush administration’s defense of capital case illegal immigrant that the Bush administration wanted to use international law to stop the exception of a Mexican national who committed murder.

Cruz argued on behalf of the state of Texas in front of the Supreme Court that Texas should be able to execute the Mexican national and the Bush administration was wrong.

if cruz had merely argued the case at the SC level— he would be more substantive on immigration than Trump.

But Cruz won the case and Texas executed this illegal immigrant guilty of a capital crime.

That is real action. What in the world has Trump done that is so impressive on illegal immigration?

Why would he not allow immigration that helped his sense of business and making money?

Do we even know how regularly his businesses hire illegal immigrants?

I don’t think we do.

I think that is probably why Walker said build a fence with Canada. They thought saying absurd things about immigration was all the base wanted.

Why don’t actions matter?

The really amazing thing is that he hasn’t really started spending his own money yet. The guy is a master at getting free publicity.

Well Hannity was right on his show tonight when he told Trump the GOPe are going to run massive attack ads agains’t him in the early primary states. That stuff usually has an impact and I’m sure Trump knows it. I assume he has some plan of counter attack. Although at many of his rallies and in interviews like tonight he warns people that its not the candidates its their donors who own them that are putting up the money. Hopefully most people are getting the message.

Romney just destroyed Newt in Fla with those negative ads. Its definitely something to be concerned about.

The national GOP as personified by McConnell and Boehner are worse than liberals, they are turncoats beholden to Wall Street donors. They talk conservative to get elected, then actively and openly oppose conservative candidates and ideas. They have publicly voiced their scorn of the conservative base. They are in cahoots with Obama and the libs on major issues.

Trump isn’t Republican? Good. Now that election season is here, Cruz rails against the Republican party, also.

Trump hasn’t done anything conservative as a politician? Good.

Trump wasn’t one, until now. Being a private citizen who makes it in business is conservatism. If he had been a politician in the last ten or so years he’d be hopelessly corrupted by now or ridden out of office by the GOPe.

What exactly has Cruz done to stop loose immigration policies, the Iran deal, or this horrible TPP mess? He makes a fine speech, but before he was running for President he certainly played ball with the GOPe.

Trump is a “Wealth Elite?” Good.

Hi wealth insulates him from GOP donor corruption. He’s a real estate guy, not a globalist depending on cheap labor and trade. He’s main street, not Wall Street. As long as he thinks American business is competing with other countries and not colluding with them, I hope he gets even richer.

I don’t think Cruz is a bad guy, he’s just not the guy for the moment.

‘Ted Cruz says illegals will never be allowed to have citizenship.’

Has Cruz detailed how he will stop the courts from giving foreign invaders citizenship after he makes them legal?

I fully expect a few RINO senators to defect to the Democratic party after Trump is elected.

For those who keep pretending Trump has illegal immigration credentials and want to know what Cruz would do about illegal immigration, I have a suggestion.

Why don’t you all ask Jose Ernesto Medellin what Cruz would do on illegal immigration?

I think he knows.

Go ahead— google it.

Cruz did not implement this but this is from another thread already on FR

Ironically, they relate this to trump— which is silly.

Cruz is a senator from Texas and strong Texas roots.

This is more typical of a Texas stye of what would happen in the future on illegal immigration:

An ABC national poll should be out sometime tomorrow morning, and Trump is going to be on Good Morning America 7 AM to go over it.

There’s talk about a Trump/Carson Ticket. When asked about it, Trump said that was an interesting prospect.

Trump also said that he is open to being on a Ticket with Carson; saying: “Stranger things have happened.”

He is not actually not a Republican.

Jeb is so maybe you should be on one of his threads telling us why he is more conservative.

His immigration plan is considerably more conservative than most all of the Republican party.
