Neurotically ignoring the fact that Donald Trumps position on immigration has catapulted him to the lead for the Republican presidential nomination, the media diminish his soaring poll numbers with a scrolling series of rationalizations. Trump might or might not be the nominee, but the dismissals of him are wishful thinking, not historical fact.
All summer, for example, we were smugly assured that polls mean nothing this far in advance of an election. Sen. Marco Rubios (R-Fla.) campaign manager Terry Sullivan assured Politico: Show me the candidate who was first place in August who ended up winning in February. I hope Rubios advisers are as sure about this as they were about amnesty being a big hit with voters. Then it was September, and Trump was still in first place, so Rubio boasted to CNN, We want to be in first place in February, not in August or September.
The way things are going, at some point, Rubios line will have to be, We want to be in first place in March, not in February. No, wait! We want to be first place in June, not in April. In fact, most candidates who were in first place the summer before an election year went on to be the nominee. Luckily, Politico is not a website primarily concerned with politics or it might have known this. Among them: Ronald Reagan in August 1979, Walter Mondale in August 1983, Michael Dukakis (tied for first) in August 1987, Bob Dole in August 1995; George W. Bush in August 1999 and Mitt Romney in August 2011.

The media reported a good story, then they got marching orders to destroy him.
They failed.
Trump is far closer to Michael Moore than Ronald Reagan.
not a damned clue....the man's internal reflex is leftward ho......
And by his own words he's a deal maker. Without that internal conservative anchor, he's perfectly likely to make deals with Democrats on just about anything and everything. Can you imagine a Sandy Hook under his watch? With the media screaming and demagoguing the issue, just as an example, I can see Trump meeting the Democrats half way and giving ground on our 2nd amendment rights. Everyone complains that the Republican congress does nothing, but the one thing they do accomplish is blocking Obama getting much in the way of legislation on things like gun control. Yes, he does go around the Legislature with EO's, but those can be reversed IF we have an actual conservative President who is willing to do it.
And he has his whole life...used to call that crony capitalism, or cronyism...now many so called "conservatives" call it brilliant.
We’re in cult of personality territory, unfortunately it is just going to have to play out. People will eventually get tired of his shtick and see him for what he is, or we will waste another campaign cycle on a candidate who is unelectable in a general election.
FR Trump comparison list:
In one way Trump is just as good if not better than Reagan: It’s in their ability to bypass the media and speak directly to the voters and constituents.
His Twitter posts — both the rants and the substative ones — are seen and reported on just as widely as anything Reagan said when he broadcasted his messages from the White House. And what’s amazing: Trump isn’t even president, yet he already has a tremendous media platform.
All for free.
True. He isn’t even President and he is also affecting change everywhere.
Interesting.
But Jesus Christ stands alone.
Yeah. Who is the “she?”
The example of Reagan himself completely demolishes this argument (except for the loudmouth part). Reagan followed through on many of his campaign promises, solving the biggest problems: The Carter economy and the Cold War.
Reagan did it by hiring the best people he could find and letting them do their thing.
Trump has more than proven his aptitude in doing the same, and making billions of dollars in process.
Of course, lesser men have occupied the White House, which gives you your lowered expectations of what someone can accomplish as president.
But even if you hop on board the Trump train with lowered expectations, Trump should be able to surprise on the upside.
*head on desk*
So when Trump said he would build the Trump Towers, that was just talk no action.
You're saying there's nothing in Trump's past that proves he follows through on his words.
You're willfully ignoring decades of Trump's promises that he actually kept.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Including both Reagan and Trump.
But despite this, Reagan was a tremendous president, and Trump has what it takes to be just as effective and consequential.
dead, you are too awesome, but you’re implying that Reagan was possessed. :)
Rephrase: Jesus Christ should not be included on a list with ANYONE because we are ALL sinners, but NOT Him (He is GOD)...
“For He hath made Him (Christ) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Cor 5:21)
One could say the same thing about Little Jebbie. He is probably more despised by the base than McCain.
Either the polls are massively wrong or Trump will win the nomination at this point. If Little Jebbie were up by the numbers Trump is and for 100 straight days we would be hearing it’s over he has the nomination.
Trump’s negatives and those saying they would never vote him numbers continue to drop so he is selling something that the voters like. Again I am a Cruz supporter but the nomination is Trumps to lose at this point.
