Vladimir Putin announces Russia-led Central Asian military force
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 9:42PM BST 16 Oct 2015 | Roland Oliphant

Vladimir Putin has proposed setting up a NATO-style joint task force of post-Soviet states to secure the borders of Central Asia amid fears of Taliban “spillover” from Afghanistan.

A fresh sign of the Russian president’s new military assertiveness, the deployment raises the possibility of Russian and allied troops being deployed along Tajikistan’s 800-mile border with Afghanistan, and Moscow tightening its influence of governments in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

It comes a day after Barack Obama said American troops would stay in Afghanistan for at least two more years—itself a tacit admission that the Afghan government is unable to tackle the threat of a resurgent Taliban alone. …

Yeah. Like it/him or not, Putin seems to be acting intelligently as viewed from his interest(s). I don’t claim to understand them precisely but in general his actions are coherent with his aims. Contrast that to the US.

And frankly, it does not seem massively hostile nor belligerent to the US. It is reactive to our meddling, as in the Ukraine. It is purposefully taking advantage of our astounding clumsiness in the ME. I am not making an apology for Putin; I think he is acting deliberately and intelligently to protect his interests which are not ours, indeed, we are competitors in terms of influence. But that enmity certainly does not rise to the hatred levels of N. Korea or Iran or even most Arab nations. He means business. Our guy means broccoli dip at the BBQ. I don’t thank anyone would doubt that Putin would rather cooperate with the US than fight us militarily, even the proxy wars in the Ukraine and Syria.

I believe the US lost a terrific opportunity when 1: HRC was SOS with her stupid little “reset” trick. and 2: When 0bama suggested to the Russian def minister “wait til I am re-elected, then we can [get stuff done]. The initial reaction to that as far as conservatives are concerned was like a reaction to treason; but sadly we are accustomed to that from our POTUS. However, the true reaction from Russia was they were dealing with a weak, feckless fool, and there was no great need to engage in delicate negotiations. They could just take what they want as long as they do it “positionally” like a 1950’s Russian chess game.

We made a very great mistake IMO after the wall came down rubbing Russia’s face in their poop. With good reason, I suppose. But we failed to understand how chaotic Russia would be post-USSR and we failed a grand, civilization-enhancing opportunity to get closer to the Russians and at least, agree on the emerging importance of combatting Islamic terror. Perhaps that is a naive and overly utopian view. I will borrow it.

"The situation there [in Afghanistan] is genuinely close to critical," Mr Putin told a summit of former Soviet states in Burabay, Kazakhstan. “Terrorists of different stripes are gaining more influence and do not hide their plans for further expansion. One of their aims is the break into the Central Asian region.”

Maybe Russia should go back into Afghanistan and pick up where the USSR left off.

Understandable, yet overall disturbing development.
The world is going to regret a reconstituted USSR 2.0.
Putin is KGB.
He believes and stated the break-up of the Soviet Union was a tragic mistake.

The ancestors of the 20,000,000 people murdered by a still unapologetic Russia, demand justice.
The tens of millions of post-WWII people forcefully displaced from eastern bloc countries into Siberia want their story heard.
Lest it happen again.

USSR or Russian Empire under the Czars. And for what it’s worth. US relations with the Czarist government were cordial.

Historically, Central Asians are notoriously unreliable under Russian or Soviet leadership. Putin needs to brush up on the region once called Russian Turkistan, especially from 1867 when Russia consolidated its hold there.

Google “Karshi draft riots 1916”.

Still better that Russia controls those regions than Islamo-Fascists.

...." Like it/him or not, Putin seems to be acting intelligently as viewed from his interests"....

I believe so too....and his moves, when you read the entire article, is no different then when Eu/USNato Countries began putting our bases and troops and others along Nato borders during the Ukraine issues....often through blackmail if they weren't cooperative or strong-armed with sweet deals to go along........I suspect Putin will do likewise with those who might want something in return.

Additionally...Putins more than fed up with Erdogan/Turkey...he knows Erogan has much to do with the movement of Terrorist's into Syria, the Refugee situation he's using to blackmail Europe and the love Terrorist's have for Erdogan......so if you look at the map you see those countries mentioned border Turkey who continues to funnel through terrorists at will.

Pardon me, I’m not sure I get the point you’re bringing up.
The point I’m making is that the world had better be on guard for the reconstitution of the Soviet Union.
Caution is warranted because their thug leader is likely to take full advantage of Obola’s deliberate (I’ll have more flexibility) weakness.
Putin and Russians unabashedly see little wrong in the way Stalin killed 20 Million in the 20’s, and nothing wrong with expanding into eastern bloc countries by brutally deporting Tens of Millions ethnic undesirables in order to take over those countries. Stalin literally collaborated with Hitler and taught them how to ethnically cleanse populations.

Pre-1917 Communist revolution Czar - US cordial relationships have little to do with where we go from here.

Why?

You’ve got two anti-American factions, both of which threaten nuclear attack and both of which, frankly, are as globally imperialistic as each other. Never mind their working together to the detriment of the USA.

"the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [20th] century" -Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the collapse of the Soviet Union...

"World democratic opinion has yet to realize the alarming implications of President Vladimir Putin's State of the Union speech on April 25, 2005, in which he said that the collapse of the Soviet Union represented the 'greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.'..."

"The more I see and read about Mr. Putin, in power since 1999, and his 'managed democracy,' the more apprehensive I become about the future of Russia and the safety of its neighbors.

If Putin believes that the dissolution of the Soviet Union into 15 independent states represents the 'greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,' then it follows that Putin might well believe he should do something to repair the loss..."

The Kremlin’s Troll Army: Moscow is financing legions of pro-Russia Internet commenters:

A June article by Max Seddon of BuzzFeed reported the Kremlin was spending millions of dollars to pay English-speaking Russians to promote President Vladimir Putin and his policies in U.S. media like Fox News broadcasting and The Huffington Post and Politico news sites. Trolls are reportedly expected to manage multiple fake accounts and post on news articles 50 times a day, often with sentiments as simplistic as “Putin makes Obama look stupid and weak!”

They do this only in an attempt to win the trust of anti-Obama folks -- a sneaky way to add credibility to their pro-Russia, pro-Putin BS.
Yet it seems to work on some of us! In reality, Obama is the best thing that has happened to Russia in a long time.--ETL

Absolutely! I was deployed to Uzbekistan, and secular Uzbeks liked their vodka, their women dressed as they pleased, and all regarded Afghanistan to the south as a Wahhabist hellhole.

For better or worse, Russia is still the window to the West for most Uzbeks.
