Africa's poor grow by 100 million since 1990

The number of Africans trapped in poverty has surged by around 100 million over the past quarter century, the World Bank said on Friday, despite years of economic growth and multi-million dollar aid programs.

The report's figures, described as "staggering" by the bank's Africa head Makhtar Diop, showed widespread malnutrition, and rising violence against civilians, particularly in central regions and the Horn of Africa.

"It is projected that the world's extreme poor will be increasingly concentrated in Africa," Diop added in a foreword.

A surge in population meant the proportion of Africans in poverty had actually fallen since 1990, but the actual numbers were up.

In a major study of households taking stock of African economies and societies after two decades of relatively strong growth, the Bank said 388 million - 43 percent of the sub-Saharan region's 900 million people - lived on less than $1.90 a day.

In 1990, at the start of the study period, the ratio was 56 percent, or 284 million.

Western medicine and technology cut back third world death rates, so their populations skyrocketed.

Meanwhile the West has been having fewer and fewer children.

Hoist with our own petard.

Add in a Judeo-Christian ethic and the rule of law and you are on to something. Africa is such a heartbreaking place that is stuck in a tribalistic cycle of failure and tragedy. Starting out with the basics such as clean water and sustainable agriculture would be so much more preferable to our constant habit of giving the aid to crooks who use it to sustain their own tribe with little regard for other countrymen. The rest of the world has never figured out the problem of the cursed continent.

100 million? That’s nothing. Obama’s created 200 million in this country in only 6 years.

A surge in population meant the proportion of Africans in poverty had actually fallen since 1990, but the actual numbers were up.

This actually changes the whole story and makes the headline a lie. The fact that there are proportionally fewer Africans in poverty than there were in 1990 means that they have been making progress.

“Meanwhile the West has been having fewer and fewer children.”

As infant mortality dropped and people became more wealthy they “needed” fewer children. In farming days the more kids the more hands to help. But today, the more children the higher the costs. People have one or two and invest more in them; piano lessons, dance lessons, summer school, college, etc. Up to a point, wealth turns out to be the most efficient birth control mechanism.

Other cultural and economic factors include a more selfish “me” outlook, women wanting careers instead of motherhood, and the huge cost of having and raising children. Now having said that, if we really wanted more children around, all we’d have to do is recreate the amazing job market that existed when we were having lots of children. People with lots of “disposable” income are more likely to have more children because they can afford them and still invest in them too. (The birth rate in the current recession has plummeted.)

The job market was purposely destroyed over the last 30 years by the government. The EPA and all sorts of job related legislation to make the US into a worker’s paradise has driven the jobs overseas. The vast majority of the populace is left out of the information revolution. They need jobs building widgets or plating metal. But both types of job are too environmentally risky for our liberal elites.

If the West cut off all aid to Africa, no more food, no more technology, no more medicine, no more money, the poverty rate and the population would drop dramatically. We keep giving them aid, they keep breeding, thus the increase in those in poverty. Africa is a cesspool, and malarial swamp, instead of feeding it, it should be starved.

Hopefully the third world can pull themselves up and advance enough to stop overflowing into the West, but the presistence of poverty and backwardness in places like Haiti, Venezuela, and Africa makes it seem like there’s a Bell Curve factor holding them back.
