Before Burt Bacharach teamed up permanently with Hal David, he worked with several Brill Building partners, to include Bob Hilliard.
Eugene McDaniels (1935-2011) was born in Kansas City but grew up in Omaha. Like so many, he started in gospel but migrated to jazz, learning to play sax and trumpet. His singing in both genres brought him to the attention of Sy Waronker of Liberty Records, who teamed him with producer Snuff Garrett, who would later find a successful niche for Gary Lewis. Garrett found Brill Building songs for Gene, who had a few hits in the early Sixties.
He turned to psychedelic soul-jazz in the late Sixties. Although his records did not sell, he was copied by acts from Motown to the UK. He became a hermit in Maine in his final years and died peacefully at home in 2011.
