but he didn’t win with Italians. He won with Blacks, Hispanics, gays, Jews and Asians. Although I’m sure enough other white idiots voted for him.
The last two groups i dont get. The Jewish an Asians.
They are very successful, commit almost zero crime and yet want the streets to be unsafe and pay more taxes. confuses the heck out of me.
Many years ago, and my Uncle still refers to it and you can find it on web, the upper east side used to be called GermanTown. I guess because it was mostly German. Interesting tidbit.
Unfortunately, no, there isn’t a big German vote in the city - most of my fellow German-Americans moved to the suburbs long ago. :) And of course, you are correct about the groups that were mostly responsible for gifting us with Wilhelm/DiBlasio/whatever. Though as a disclaimer, I also know conservatives from most of the groups mentioned.
You are also right that the Upper East Side used to be known as German Town - East 86th Street used to be full of German restaurants and stores. There is still a German-American parade every September that ends up in that neighborhood. And in 1999, the Grand Marshall was - Donald Trump! Yorkville/Germantown on the Upper East Side has hardly any ethnic Euros left. They’ve all moved to Rye or Manhasset. You can still see some buildings from the time it was heavily German. Also Hungarians. I believe the neighborhood has ONE German restaurant left. Don’t know about now, but there used to be an absolutely wonderful Hungarian restaurant on either York or 1st.
My very blonde, very blue-eyed mother grew up there, and everyone thought she was German, tho her recent ancestry was 100% Irish. (we don’t want to go back to the Vikings/Spaniards and others who may have visited the Auld Sod)
I think the Jews and Asians see the Republicans as the party of Christians which doesn’t work for them for obvious reasons.
