Young Margaret at right, with her sister Muriel, her mum Beatrice and her dad Alfred Roberts in his robes as Alderman of Grantham
Ninety years ago today - October 13th 1925 - Margaret Hilda Roberts was born in Grantham, an English market town in the East Midlands. Raised in a flat above her father's grocery shop, she grew up to become a research chemist, a barrister, and finally a politician - and one of the rare consequential ones, those who shape events as opposed just to stringing along with them.
Mrs Thatcher's success bred a lot of resentment, not least among the resentful twerps of her own party. I see that, to mark what would have been her 90th birthday, the Thatcher Centre is presenting a special lecture by "the former Prime Minister of Australia" Tony Abbott: He wasn't "the former" PM when they invited him, but a couple of weeks back he was toppled, like Mrs T, in a palace coup.
Just after the Fall of Thatcher, I was in the pub enjoying a drink with her daughter Carol after a little light radio work. A fellow patron, the "radical" "poet" Seething Wells, decided to have a go at her in loco parentis, which is Latin for "in the absence of her loco parent". After reciting a long catalogue of Mrs Thatcher's various crimes, he leaned into Carol, nose to nose, and summed it all up: "Basically, your mum just totally smashed the working classes

Excellent Post
Thanks!
Thatcher, Reagan, and I would add John Paul II. Will we ever see their likes again?
A moment in time that my wife and I will never forget. Margret herself, coming to our small town and speaking of Freedom, America, and Ronald Reagan. Early nineties as I recall.
We had better, or we are sunk.
Of course we have plenty of our own deranged leftist actors over here, but I was struck by the vehemence of the anti-Thatcherites in Britain.
My wife grew up in Britain and said the people had had enough of the unions strangling the economy and making life miserable for most Brits. That was one huge reason Thatcher got voted in...the Laborite unions were killing the country. They, the leftists, with the elevation of this Corbyn clown still do not seem to have gotten the message.
You could almost substitute Reagan and the USA for Thatcher and Britain in the piece. Both countries are trying to make up for the lost time and reverses of the Reagan/Thatcher years.
Were it not for those two Britain and AMerica would already be countries with only two classes, the rulers and the serfs.
Fantastic movie
She wasn’t right on immigration.
We have to reinvigorate our Churches; do a reset with the Judeo-Christian ethic and upbringing before that happens again. It all starts with us as individuals, our families and how we live our daily lives. The country has to give up pc, secularism, atheism, liberalism, socialism, drug abuse, that crazy music and start over. Too much to ask? Maybe not enough.
Actually, if its the film I am thinking of, its an excellent film: Brassed Off.
That wasn't the only anti-Thatcher scene I've seen on Brit tv. I watched an episode of "Cracker" one time with Robbie Coltrane's psychologist character determining that some wayward kid was suffering from "Thatcherism."
