Nir Barkat says citizens are often those to foil terror attacks, backs school strike over limited security guards hours
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Thursday encouraged all Israelis with a gun license to carry a weapon with them at all times in order to counter a recent wave of Palestinian attacks.
The mayors call to arms came after several weeks in which the capital was rocked by several stabbing incidents as well as rock and Molotov cocktail attacks. The focus of violence was in and around the Old City and its Temple Mount compound.
In an interview with Army Radio, Barkat responded to footage of himself walking around the city at night carrying what at first glance appeared to be a rifle, asserting that reports simply got the facts wrong.
The gun in question, he said, was a Glock 23 handgun, paired with a pistol-to-carbine conversion kit that makes the gun more accurate and thus safer.
I have a licensed gun, Barkat said. Every time there is tension, I instruct people who are allowed to carry weapons and are experienced in using them to carry their guns with them. If you check, youll see that in many cases, those who neutralized terrorists were citizens who arent necessarily police officers, like former soldiers.

Compulsory military duty for both men & women create an alert and efficient population who know how to be (all of them) “First Responders” and handle weapons.
Unfortunately for the Jews of Israel, Paleostinian and general Muslim Arab terror is commonplace.
They've seen it all before, time and time again.
Outrage after outrage and still they go to the bars, cinema and cafes like anywhere else in any suburbia.
This is a well trained people who respect and hate warfare pitted against some of the lowliest scum, the swamps of PLO/HAMAS/HIZBOLLAH/RADICAL Left/Antisemitic Right and Left/European Pansy and Muslim Barakeh Ovomit can deliver.
So go ahead Israelis kill those that would kill you and never apologize for it.
Isn’t it kind of hard to get a license in Israel? Kind of like in New York city? I thought everyone had to serve in the military, but once they were out they no longer carried.
Now there is a vacation destination!
I thought it was more like Switzerland: all young men have to serve and they are to retain weapons until they die.
You notice the pics are all of young women? They are off-duty active military.
Yeah, I thought that too. But a friend recently told me it wasn’t. Not sure if he knew what he was talking about.
Or some such foolishness like that
It is difficult to get a license in Israel. There is no RKBA as we would recognize it. The Israeli state in it’s benevolent wisdom decides how many armed folks they want, and that’s how many they have. It’s not based on a natural rights philosophy.
The Hassidic and Haredi population are exempt as are Yeshiva students (deferred but rarely enlist after leaving school) and Druze Arabs.
