The Department of Defense on Thursday placed the University of Phoenix system on probation, barring the for-profit school giant from recruiting on military bases and preventing troops from using federal money for classes.

The Defense Department provided few details on the move, but the university system has been subjected to scrutiny by the department and Congress for months.

This is the same program that was for decades run by USC and is where I earned my MS in Systems Management.

In 79/80 there were a high percentage of conservative professors which likely persists today, because THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL MANAGERS IN INDUSTRY.

Here’s some more material about the scandal or alleged scandal.

I wish all military scandals were this small.

University of Phoenix doesn’t have a great reputation for providing a quality degree. It’s more of a dropout mill than a diploma mill with the goal to string people along and keep the student loan money coming in.

My son wrapped up his time with the USMC and earned a BS in Business Administration. He has been running successful real estate businesses since that time including being a licensed broker in CA, ID and 5 other states. He has higher aspirations and is working on another BS in nuclear physics.

My son was going to continue with the MBA program from UoP, but discovered that there are two different accreditation organizations for an MBA. The one at the local Idaho State University is held in higher esteem than the UoP. After that discovery, he redirected his efforts toward nuclear physics.

That could describe a substantial number of tax supported and even non-profit private universities in the country. I would venture to say that the number would approach 100% in certain departments and majors (xxx Studies, etc.).

Actually this is a huge scandal as it lifts the veil for the whole Education post HS racket for training to get employed...

The Basics
In order to qualify for financial aid to be used to pay for the Education you provide your courses must be Accredited by a reasonable Standards Board to insure that the Juice is worth the Squeeze...

A lot of these folks are little more than diploma mills and Apollo bought them all up to form a mega company with a passel of them in their group. Now they are in position to run a network of these “schools” being funded through Federal Student Loans and we all have seen the mess that is, over 1 Trillion in outstanding student debt today and climbing with an extremely high rate of non payment or failure

But they did something very stupid to make money faster and cut corners...

They neglected and let lapse all accreditations for the Schools and Courses except one, the head school and believed all of the others were covered by this one blanket...

Nope, and now they like the whole industry is being watched, but not stopped...

Crap meets air movement device...

Wrong. They are no different than any state school.

Agreed. I shake my head at the “for profit” college controversy. Even a cursory look at all the others shows an abysmal rip off and low quality education mill, turning out degrees in womens studies, mass communication, lesbian African basketweaving, etc.

And of all places, ive seen a lot of U of Phoenix people who were in the workplace, worked long and hard for several semesters, and then got promotions at work based upon their degree.
And I have also known many waiters and waitresses who have worthless expensive degrees from state and private elite schools. The traditionals are ever bit the diploma mills that they accuse the others of.

The real issue is that non traditionals are obviously taking a large bite out of the old schools and are competing for the same student loan money.

Another question with them is the quality of faculty they can attract given their very below-market payscales.
I mean VERY below-market.

No doubt they have some good people on board, but what they can atract — well, suffice it to say....I’ve known good teachers who immediately just tossed this company’s application/recruitment package straight into the garbage can... when they saw the ‘pay.’

My wife teaches at a respected public university.

Six year graduation rate: 35%.

This is about steering the benjamins to the barking Bolsheviks at public skools and nothing else.

“The real issue is that non traditionals are obviously taking a large bite out of the old schools and are competing for the same student loan money.”

And the state ‘not for profit’ schools can’t abide the competition.

I think it is like all education, you get out of it what you put into it.

My experience with UoPhx was that you have to be self motivated and put in the work. I do think they make it sound easier than it is for their sales pitch and many folks don’t have what it takes.
