Thank you for the explanation.
“Missed it by that much!”
In the 1700s an Islamic reformer, al-Wahhabb came and preached that Moslems should give up all the niceties accumulated since the 700s and be very strict to the Koran -- so tossing out the sobering that had occured -- they teamed up and intermarried with the Sauds - so the Wahabbis and the Saudis are one and the same
they captured Mecca in the 1700s and destroyed much but were tossed out by the Egyptians under the Ottomans.
then, in the 1900s they recaptured the Hijaz region -- THANKS TO THE ENGLISH -- and threw out the Hashemite dynasty (King of Jordan's family) who were the rulers of hte hijaz for over a 1000 years
The Saudis destroyed most of Mecca and Medina -- bulldozing the tombs of the prophet's companions and wives -- because they are iconoclasts
Fast forward to the 1960s -- Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, while Moslem are not radicalized -- the burkha or chador or veil is practically unknown in the cities and rare in the countryside. There are no jihadis and the tradition is sufi or shia -- with "saints", mysticism etc
But then thanks to the oil shocks of the 1970s, the Saudis had money, lots of money. In the 90s they got even more money and, thanks to American weaponry, could train jihadis in Afghanistan with the Pakistanis
Suddenly in Pakistan and Afghanistan you see burkhas and Wahabbism spreads throughout the Moslem world bringing with it "kill the infidel"
The Saudis are the enemy, full stop.
