A 9-year-old girl is in stable condition after she was shot in Waverly Sunday afternoon, according to Baltimore Police.
Officials believe a single shooter on 36th Street opened fire on four young men and missed, striking a little girl who was playing on her steps behind them in the 3500 block of Old York Road after 1 p.m., Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said.
The intended targets ran from the scene and are considered persons of interest in the investigation, according to Davis.
Not only are we looking for the gunman, were looking for those four would-be victims, Davis said, speaking at a 5 p.m. press conference.
They knew, no doubt in my mind, who had a beef with them, Davis said. They probably know who shot [at] them, and theyre sitting in their houses right now, safe and sound, while a 9-year-old little girl is at the hospital contending with a broken femur.
The four individuals were described as young African-American males, according to Lt. T.J. Smith, spokesman for Baltimore Police.
Anyone with information may contact police at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
Interim Commissioner Davis said he checked the hotline before the press conference and found nobody had called in a tip so far.
We need the communitys help, Davis said.
According to Davis, homicides in the city have been trending downthey were in the 40s in July and 20s in Septemberand while he said no number was acceptable other than zero, he attributed quickly solved cases to quick responses from the community.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake joined police and the 300 Men March at Sundays briefing about the shooting, which occurred blocks from where 3-year-old McKenzie Elliott was killed in an unsolved drive-by in August 2014.
Another young person, another juvenile, has been shot in the crossfire, the mayor said, and I renew my request to the community to come forward with information.
Help from the community is the only way police will get violent individuals off the streets and prevent other children from becoming victims, according to the mayor.
...if you know someone whos been involved, you can help us. Give us that information, so we can get them off the street, she said.
It is a sickening, vicious cycle of violence, and if we dont stand up...as a community and give this information, Rawlings-Blake continued, what were saying is, Its OK with us.And its not OK for a 9-year-old child to be shot while shes on her steps.
“Interim Commissioner Davis said he checked the hotline before the press conference and found nobody had called in a tip so far. “
