From its very inception, modern leftism despised the "petty bourgeoisie," those ordinary people - merchants, craftsmen, and tradespeople - who had the indecency to enjoy a decent lifestyle.

The left wants to destroy the middle class and replace it with a proletariat utterly dependent on a governmental, technocratic, and entertainment elite. That's what they always do.

Socialism is elitism; they despise the notion of a Jeffersonian, propertied middle class. They want to make the masses renters. They want to make the masses too poor to want to reproduce. They want to make the masses stupid and pliable.
