A senior Saudi prince has launched an unprecedented call for change in the country’s leadership, as it faces its biggest challenge in years in the form of war, plummeting oil prices and criticism of its management of Mecca, scene of last week’s hajj tragedy.

The prince, one of the grandsons of the state’s founder, Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, has told the Guardian that there is disquiet among the royal family – and among the wider public – at the leadership of King Salman, who acceded the throne in January.

If you thought chaos in Syria was bad - just wait until Saudi Arabia hits the fan.

The USA had better be prepared to put up an absolute quarantine around the Arabian Peninsula at that point, and have total travel ban on travel to/from the Mid-East.

When Salman succeeded the old king, he removed Muqrin bin Abdulaziz from being crown prince, and replaced him with Muhammad bin Nayef. This may have caused some internal issues among the royal family.

The Saudi royals have been having a lot of kids (Salman has 8, the prior king had 18).

Each generation expects the same lifestyle they saw their father having, with the pie being divided into ever-narrower slices. This will blow up eventually.

Here is an interesting story from Iranian sponsored Press TV, saying the death toll is more than 4,000. A lot of conspiracy ideas here and in the many comments. But then, even Iranians have enemies.

Part of the key to centuries of British success was the law of primogeniture, meaning that the oldest son inherited. This forced the other sons to join the army, emigrate for business activity, or join the ministry, and in general create their own success. I think that faster travel and communications was part of the downfall of the colonial period. Now with more than half of people in poor countries having access to cell phones and computers, they see how the prosperous half is living, and by golly they are going to travel to where they might have an opportunity to have a comfortable life. Economic/resource exploitation will be a major cause of these dislocations. The Chinese are in there with both feet, but are probably less vulnerable to third world “invasions” than Europe and the US.

The link I posted in Comment #10 said the following:
“Saudi Vice Minister of Health Hamad bin Muhammad Al-Duweila said on Tuesday that he has received a photo showing that 4,173 pilgrims were killed in the tragic incident in Minda, near the holy city of Mecca, according to some reports.

The Saudi Health Ministry asserted that heat exhaustion and suffocation are to blame for the pilgrims’ death, the reports said.” The Health Ministry later denied this report. So the question now is whether this might be a sign of the internal SA infighting. Whose faction does/did Saudi Vice Minister of Health Hamad bin Muhammad Al-Duweila belong to. Has he been fired or worse? Is SA covering up a much higher death toll, or is Iran making a mountain out of a foothill?
