All you need to know about the failed speakership of John Boehner was exposed to the entire world by Boehner himself as he announced his resignation from Congress. The what, the how, and the why of his failures were succinctly explained when he said, The first job of any Speaker is to protect this institution that we all love.
Do what? Well, no wonder he was a disaster as speaker. He had no clue what the job description was. In just 15 words, everything about his disastrous reign was brought into laser-sharp focus. Never has someone so orange said so much with so few words and so many tears. When you're this out of touch and have abused this much power and wasted this many opportunities that have caused a nation great pain, there is no limit to the scorn you deserve.
And for the record, that "institution that we all love" comment may be the dumbest political statement since David Brooks proclaimed Barack Obama a great president on the strength of his pant crease. It's also a perfect bookend comment to some words he uttered through tears in November of 2010 as he was preparing to take the gavel without a clue what message the voters had just sent.
The salient point that Boehner made clear is that the country is here to serve the government. The important people are those in government. What else can his words possibly mean? When he said "the institution that we all love" it's clear that we means the House of Cards Washington Cartel in the House. For damned sure, no one else has any love for that institution.
No one this side of Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood character has shown so much disdain for constituents while playing the Potomac game.

I despise this man with every fabric of my body.
He is an odious, craven backstabber with some vile deed that lead to his compromise.
Bone - er was the worst speaker in the history of Congress, and a traitor to the American People too boot.
SHAME!
I’d sure want to ask, what do you mean by institution?
If you’re talking about the country the word “institution” would be an odd way to describe it, but otherwise I’d agree...
If you’re talking about Congress, that is exactly what is wrong with the government today. Each member is looking out for itself, there is no teamwork with the “We The People” based on looking out for the country. And ironically that is exactly the way to look terrible!
Yup. And duh!
What the heck has he done since Republicans won the Senate several months ago?
This is why a guy like Trump can be the leader in the primaries — conservatives are tired of it.
Prison would be too nice for his offenses against America and its people
His “institution” is a haven for the inept, the immoral, and the lower mental classes.
No respect is due to that collection of felons, and no respect is given.
Die, Boehner, die.
“Prison would be too nice for his offenses against America and its people”
I consider it a duty to arrest him for treason for not obeying what the Constitution clearly calls for, impeachment of Obama and many of his cronies.
It’s like Congress’ job description is “Act royal. Beyond that we don’t care.”
Boehner is the weakest, most ineffectual speaker of the house in my lifetime.
Oh, a LOT of modern politicians should deserve that.
Failing this, the only remedy left is to replace the ones with a bad vision with those who have a good vision.
Federal judicial retention elections too....
Being uber-conservative in stated policy means quite little when you then sit obediently (to the manners of the “institution”) in a corner not doing very much and acting above it all in any case.
A new breed of politician that has no patience for this is needed.
How is it that the American people have managed to place the most immoral, inept, defective people in this country in positions of authority throughout government? Rhetorical question.
Legacy of his leadership role with Gingrich’s Contract of America in 1994 built his reputation. Compromised and worthless ever since.
>> most ineffectual
Same as “feckless,” but less pompous.
It is all part of the “machine” that corrupts decent people.
That is why term limits are good. It forces new blood into the process.
Unfortunately, the mainstream media gave him just enough rope and he eventually hung himself. Still, I would really like to see another conservative Speaker with Newt's vision and abilities.
He was the worst representative of the people that put him in that position. At least Pelosi represented those that voted for her.
The big difference between Boehner and Gingrich is that Newt had a specific agenda he wanted to accomplish as Speaker while Boehner only wanted to be Speaker. The classic differrence between a person who wants to do something and another who wants to be someone. They both worked hard for their goal and lost focus when they accomplished it. In the final analysis, I think it is clear that the country was better off for having the service of Gingrich than Boehner.
