Iran's president uses UN speech to call for investigation into hajj stampede

Hassan Rouhani demands review of what caused the crush that killed more than 700 after Saudi Arabia’s top cleric reportedly absolves officials of blame

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani used a major United Nations speech on Saturday to demand an investigation into a crush that killed more than 700 people at the hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

His remarks came after Saudi Arabia’s most senior cleric, the grand mufti, appeared to absolve the authorities of blame for the stampede at Mecca.

“You are not responsible for what happened,” grand mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin-Abdullah al-Sheikh was quoted by the official Saudi press agency, SPA, as telling the interior minister, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.

“As for the things that humans cannot control, you are not blamed for them. Fate and destiny are inevitable,” he added during the meeting, reported to have happened on Friday night.

On Saturday, the Saudi health ministry said on Twitter that the death toll of the hajj disaster stood at 769 pilgrims killed and 934 injured, updating previous figures. It did not offer nationalities for the dead and injured, but Tehran says more than 130 of the dead were Iranians.

Hassan Rouhani demands review of what caused the crush that killed more than 700...

And he'll get it, too. He can review it when it happens again next year.

WOW. There is a photo at the Atlantic which shows part of the Hajj. I don’t know how anyone in their right mind would feel safe in that mass of people. http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/09/hajj-stampede-crowd-disasters/407542/

The smell alone could kill.

To quote them: Muslim leaders, elites, and politicians should demand the change of authority in charge of running the annual Hajj pilgrimage from the House of Saud to a collection of Muslim states.

A collection of Muslim states...the caliphate.

Your revision clearly makes more sense.

There was a time, in the not too distant past, when such cruelty was commonplace, and its consequences rarely thought of, as animals of all kinds were just - things.

Compassion is a learned skill, not necessarily present in very young children, or those of whom have never had much in the way of moral or ethical instruction. There are wide swathes of humanity in which this degree of skilled empathy has never been reached, mobs of all kinds, and revolutionaries of every stripe. It is the kind of mind set that can condemn anyone, or anything, to a life of trepidation, pain and early death. Civilization has been one painful step after another to alleviate or eliminate this kind of gratuitous cruelty and indifference to the pain of another.

And yet, that is exactly the kind of thinking that the Islamic hordes seem to gear themselves to from birth. There is sometimes no reasoning that will engage their capacity for critical thinking.

I’m 64 and never treated an animal like that, never knew anyone who did, and would have thought very badly of anyone who did that sort of thing, even when I was a child.

Thank you for your clarification. That post describing the torturing of kittens just to make a political point is the cruelest most despicable thing I have ever read on FR.

I thought we as FReepers were above that.

Well, if they promise to simply use it on Mecca, I guess we could allow them to have 1 nuke..../sarc.
