The root of the problem seems to be a round off error between anglo and metric values for the exhaust gas makeup

This will get hyped as there will be no vehicles in the diesel category that perform on a static dyne and on the road in the same manner.
The real question is what other companies have a computer set performance that can recognize it is off the dyno and then give better power or consumption at the expense of emissions?

Some here may recall how the so-called "sudden acceleration" problem nearly destroyed Audi. ( It also let me buy a brand new Audi 5000S <5 speed stick> for $11K) an absolute steal..and one of the best cars I ever owned.
This is gonna be a gazillion times bigger..class action lawsuits will be launched in a flash...and you'll be able to pick up a 1-2 year old VW for a pittance..

Between ridiculously stringent emissions standards and mandatory first law violating fuel mileage standards something has to give.
Why doesn't government pass a law repealing friction and air resistance. Oh and they can repeal gravity too while they're at it. Makes as much sense as these absurd mileage and emissions standards.

Europe is being invaded by its oldest enemies, the middle east is collapsing, the EU economy is on the brink and...what they worry about is a miscalibration on exhaust gases?

Interestingly, the ICCT noted that other current BMW turbodiesel models are still within the Euro 6 guidelines. The X3 xDrive20d is not available in the USA, if I remember correctly.

It’s likely the EPA was demanding standards that could not be kept by anybody.

It is being reported that Mercedes (some models) and GM (specifically the Cruze diesel) may have employed similar programming.
Until a few years ago, diesel technology was being jointly developed by Mercedes and the VW group.

Back when Obozo’s minions first came to power, in 2009, their Environmental nutcases had a meeting with the automakers representatives.
When they were informed that the mileage and pollution standards were going to be severely tightened, one representative said that you couldn’t do that because of the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
The Obozoids replied, “Who made that law? We’ll get it repealed.”
The automotive engineer could only shake his head in absolute astonishment................................

I'm with you. I've had a VW before - good car. I'd like to someday own an Audi. (with kids in college though...)
However, I'll be keeping a close eye on the market. If I can pick up a nice VW Passat or maybe an Audi A3/A4 cheap... I don't particularly care if they are "de-tuned" and considered under powered from their "emissions cavalier" forms. I don't tend to drive very aggressively anyway - not in an 8 year old clapped-out stock hatchback anyway. ;-/

I’ve told this story before. One of my buds is a certified licensed BMW mechanic and he says NEVER buy a BMW. Especially the 3 and 5 series, they;re the worst and they just make money for repair shops.

Not necessarily. Volvo recently demonstrated a new generation of turbodiesel engines meeting Euro 6 emission standards where the low emission levels are guaranteed by Volvo for the life of the car, thanks to a new of generation of highly-advanced common-rail pressurized direct fuel injection.

and you'll be able to pick up a 1-2 year old VW for a pittance.. I don't think so. These cars are getting better mileage than they are supposed to, so they might actually go UP!.......................
