While delivering the first address from a pontiff to a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, Pope Francis touched on topics ranging from the plight of immigrants to climate change and the death penalty.
Many of his comments were lightly delivered and unlikely to elicit much controversy, though the reaction might be different if they were given by another world leader.
Case in point: Toward the beginning of his address, Francis alluded to religious extremism, noting that "no religion is immune" from it. His full quote as prepared for delivery:
"Our world is increasingly a place of violent conflict, hatred and brutal atrocities, committed even in the name of God and of religion. We know that no religion is immune from forms of individual delusion or ideological extremism. This means that we must be especially attentive to every type of fundamentalism, whether religious or of any other kind. A delicate balance is required to combat violence perpetrated in the name of a religion, an ideology or an economic system, while also safeguarding religious freedom, intellectual freedom and individual freedoms."
The remarks echo those delivered albeit with more explicit historical references by President Barack Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast in February.
"Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ So this is not unique to one group or one religion. There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency that can pervert and distort our faith."
Obama's comments were criticized as "offensive," "wrongheaded" and detached from present-day reality. Of course, it's more politically acceptable to criticize the president than the pope time will tell if Francis' remarks draw a similar response.
"But as the pope is Antichrist, so the Turk is the very devil. The prayer of Christendom is against both. Both shall go down to hell, even though it may take the Last Day to send them there; and I hope it will not be long."
Dear Mister Pope.....
My jesus open your eyes and shut your mouth!
“Good summary as to why Catholics are NOT Christians.”
I appreciate Catholics, but no, they are not Christians. They are not Christians theologically, Biblically, and doctrinally.
CHRISTtians FOLLOW ONLY THE JESUS CHRIST OF THE HOLY BIBLE. Our Salvation come ONLY from CHRIST. We don’t need to go through some church in order to be saved (Romans 10:9)
CHRIST JESUS is the ONLY MEDIATOR BETWEEN MAN AND GOD (1 Timothy 2:5), and the Holy Bible is our ONLY AUTHORITY (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
CHRISTians also believe in the Tri-une Godhead (FATHER, SON, HOLY SPIRIT) (Matthew 28:19; John 1:1; 1 John 5:7).
Mary is found nowhere in the Godhead. She is NOT a mediator between us and God the Father or us and God the Son. She was blessed “among” women NOT “above” them. She too needed a Saviour - according to her (Luke 1:47).
ALL humans need a Saviour because we are ALL sinners (Romans 3:23). CHRIST is the ONLY Human who lived a sinless life - not some pastor, pope, or priest (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; Luke 1:35; 1 John 3:5).
The ONLY Saviour came and died on the Calvary’s Cross 2,000 years ago for humans. In order to have Eternal life in Heaven with JESUS, and not in hell with the unsaved, you MUST BE BORN AGAIN BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (John 3). God said good works will not do it, otherwise, Christ came and died for nothing. We know He came to save souls!
If you have not received JESUS as your Saviour, I please ask you to do it today - not tomorrow - but today. CHRIST MUST SOLELY be received in your heart, mind, and life.
God bless.
Thanks for not disappointing me, kitten paws.
Another mindless screed from the “know nothing” branch of FR.

John 16:2 comes to mind.
Many times I get the impression that the Pope is not familiar with the Holy Bible.
friend, I have seen far too many shocking comments about Catholics to ever consider telling fellow Catholics about the site.
This development is overall quite recent, within the last few years or so.
Some of these friends are older people, one an elderly lady and I think they’d be deeply hurt by such commentary. I don’t think they’d even know what to say in response. Have they ever been exposed to such thinking I do not know but I really doubt it.
I’d never willingly expose those folks to such things.
A friend of mine is a priest in Boston, a fellow Conservative and a Christian the likes of which I know I will never be able to emulate. I’d never expose him or his seminarians to such comments.
Catholics do not appear to be welcome on this forum by many Conservatives.
guiding them
That is so beautiful. Thank you.
Our world is temporary for us.
I am Catholic and I criticize the pope when I think he is leading the flock astray. That’s what any devout Catholic should do. This thread is fast turning into another Catholic bashing threat. That’s not necessary. Why protestants want to criticize the pope I can’t figure out. His views on anything have nothing at all to do with the protestant faith.
No Christians strapping on suicide bombs and killing nonChristians, either.
What total hypocrites our Congress and Government on all levels are!
All that we have heard for years in an ever higher shrieking voice is the total need to wipe religion off of the face of the earth and ensure THAT NO RELIGIOUS activities at all are held in our public schools, government buildings and assemblies from the city level to the highest level in the land AND THEN THEY HAVE THE POPE COME AND GIVE THE CITIZENS A DOSE OF CATHOLIC PROPAGANDA!
Hear the silence? I do.
The things you don’t know about Catholicism could fill books. I leave your salvation as an issue to be decided between you and your God. Please extend me the same courtesy. Let God alone decide if I belong to him or not. Not you or anyone else. Got it?

Crackpot Pope making friends with a crowd that hates Christians in general and Catholics in particular.
Well said, friend.
Thank you.
What happened to this site...?
The Pope does not have much of a guard should Italy be infested further by Islam.
I think this is the Pope looking to avoid assassination attempts by Islamic terrorist.
Good point—and let’s not forget Jan Sobieski saving Vienna in 1673 and putting the Turks back in their sandbox for three hundred years.
I thank God He has ordained me as one of His prophetic ministers to speak the truth straight from His Only Holy Word.
My orders come from God alone! Thank You, Jesus!
Be blessed.
He was speaking more about the Muslims.
