“However, let’s not forget that Reagan wasn’t exactly flawless either - while we’re on the subject of immigration, recall that he effectively granted amnesty to illegals in 1986 (and when challenged by members of his own party, he said that he couldn’t see what the big deal is).”
I) worked for Reagan on 2 elections, then at the Fox Tower in Century City right after he retired.
2 things.
If the amnesty bill had been enforced, we wouldn’t have this illegal problem. The whores in both parties ignored it 100% fron day one. Yes, it was a mistake. He underestimated EVIL men.
2)Reagan said the amnesty was the worst mistake he made as POTUS.
Most of the current advocates of "immigration reform" promise us that amnesty will just be a one-time deal, that once the current crop are forgiven, the border will be secure and there will be no future amnesties. That's what was promised in 1986, and that isn't how things worked out then. The situation is far worse now because of the sheer volume of illegals.
Reagan said the amnesty was the worst mistake he made as POTUS
If he indeed said this, I'm pleased to hear it. One of Reagan's strengths was a willingness to admit that he made mistakes, as opposed to sticking to the wrong side of an issue out of stubbornness and vanity.
I agree with your take on it.
At the time I winced. I didn’t want to see him grand amnesty, but you hope you’re wrong and for the best as well.
As you state, the amnesty part they enforced.
The new tougher laws, none of it...
