I think I read that he plugged it in. I’ve got an old clock similar to that one and the 9V backup won’t actually run the clock. It just keeps it from losing the time when the power goes out.

And the claim by certain idiots that the senate and house would have “held Romney’s feet to the fire” is laughable because of one thing: What have they done to oppose Obama on those same things?

Okay, so they call it a pencil box because it’s sold as one; thanks for the update. First time I’ve seen one, it’s been decades since I used a pencil box. The ones I had were simple plastic holding only a few pencils and pens, and had a sliding cover that doubled as a ruler, as well as a built-in sharpener. (Still looks like a bomb case...)
I came close to it. When I was a teen, a friend asked me to hotwire his car. Several ways to do it, either under the dash or at the engine compartment. I got a good-sized jolt crossing a couple wires at the coil, and burned a slot into my finger. He took me to the emergency room at a nearby hospital and got suspicious glances when explaining how it happened. You do something like that only once, if you survive! In thinking about it, some people only get to do it once...

I had one from RadioShack that would retain the time and set the alarms off at full volume on battery backup so that workers would still be awakened in the event of a power failure.
That seems like an odd feature for a bedroom alarm clock to have. My guess is that that is not the norm and was not the case with the boy’s clock.
Maybe even before the story broke...
