My native language is German and there are many Germans here in my town. Germans speak always English when Americans are around. They find it very rude not to.

My husband and I met in Germany in 1962. When we met I could barely speak English. I had English in school but we learned the Oxford English which was totally useless and I had lost interest it.
To make a long story short, by the time my husband was transferred back to the States in 1966 and we all came here I was able not just to speak English, but also to read and write English

My German great grandmother only talked German around us when she didn’t want us to understand what she was saying....and, she made us STAND UP when the National Anthem was played...ON TV!
