(CNSNews.com) The United States should make clear to China that it does not recognize its sovereignty claims in the South China Sea by sailing warships within 12 nautical miles of artificial islands Beijing has constructed, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Thursday.
Not doing so, he said during a committee hearing on maritime security strategy in the Asia-Pacific, was a dangerous mistake that grants de-facto recognition of Chinas man-made sovereignty claims.
Pressed as to the last time U.S. Navy ships did enter the waters within 12 miles of the artificial islands, assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs David Shear told McCain that had happened in 2012.
Elsewhere in the South China Sea, he said, the U.S. had conducted freedom of navigation operations most recently last April.
(Freedom of navigation operations are those that assert the navys rights to sail both within 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zones and 12 nautical mile territorial waters recognized under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.)

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
I’ll wait for the military and history guys and gals to jump in since i know little of this situation.
The problem is that the Chinese have Obama’s records from Occedental, Columbia and Harvard where he registered as a Foreign Student. So we do what they want us to do.
Avoiding sailing is wrong. Sailing in like McCain wants is wrong as it’s obviously belligerent. Right way: just quietly advise the Chinese when a ship has normal budiness sailing by, without being openly provocative about it and without forcing China’s hand into defending against it like could easily be the case with mcCain’s approach
Good points. Additionally, McCain’s track record in Syria (where he was an early advocate of the groups that evolved into ISIS) doesn’t give one much confidence in his abilities in such areas.
That may be the ONLY thing McCain has said that I agree with!
Obama must desire insult, because he’s dismantling our ability to repel it. Obama must not desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our former prosperity, because he is making it known that the USA is never ready for war.
(Apologies to George Washington)
Should turn them into a new bombing range.
