Police announce no charges for clock deemed 'hoax bomb'

Update at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday: At a press conference this morning, Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd said charges won't be filed against Ahmed Mohamed, the MacArthur High School freshman arrested Monday after bringing what school officials and police described as a "hoax bomb" on campus.

Boyd said the device -- confiscated by an English teacher despite the teen's insistence that it was a clock -- was "certainly suspicious in nature.

"The student showed the device to a teacher, who was concerned that it was possibly the infrastructure for a bomb," Boyd said.

School officers questioned Ahmed about the device and why he'd brought it to school. Boyd said Ahmed was then handcuffed "for his safety and for the safety of the officers" and taken to a juvenile detention center. He was later released to his parents, Boyd said.

"The follow-up investigation revealed the device apparently was a homemade experiment, and there's no evidence to support the perception he intended to create alarm," Boyd said.

again.

We’re told that bombs can be made with toothpaste or a bottle of water or cell phone or whatever.

How is she ignorant when this is OBVIOUSLY a hoax bomb.

And maybe he was arrested because it appeared to be a hoax bomb and that’s why the bomb squad wasn’t called in.

Anyone think of that?

It’s illegal in Texas to make a hoax bomb. well, maybe not make one, but attempt to cause alarm with one.

Did you see anything there that might be an explosive? Did you see anything there that might be a detonator? a blasting cap?

Me neither.

Most teachers go to Liberal arts colleges. Most teachers are required to take at least one science class.

If they can have D.A.R.E. come in and show the kiddies what drugs look like, maybe there should be a workshop on what explosives and bombs look like, or at least the basics for teachers.

As for toothpaste, no. It is the stuff you can put in the tube that will, when mixed with other stuff (a powder) will make an explosive (binary explosive). There is another popular (among jihaditypes) explosive which could be placed in a toothpaste tube, and dried before use, but it is notoriously unstable (even the muslims call it "Mother of Satan").

Now, maybe I know more about these things because I have bothered to learn. I have no military experience, and only passing familiarity with some basic explosive types through my work.

Simply enough, most timed bombs have some sort of power source or a chemical timer, an initiating charge (the little bang that sets off the explosive and makes the big bang)--like a blasting cap, and an explosive. There may be multiple initiating charges and explosive units, as in a bomb vest. Although some can be set off by a mechanical igniter, most such are grenades, booby traps, or land mines.

In this case, there is the timer (clock), and the battery, but no explosive.

Why do you think the Science teacher told him not to show anyone?? Because the SCIENCE teacher knew it could cause alarm.

Sure.

That's a sad commentary on the rest of the teaching profession, and maybe the population in general. Ignorance makes this sort of panic possible, even easy, which means the American population is easy to manipulate.

Think about that for a second.

When the terrorists bombed US Embassies in Africa, they played on human nature to magnify the effect. They set off a small explosion in the street outside, and timed the big one to go off after everyone lined the windows to see what was going on. They shredded people with broken glass when the second, larger bombs went off.

The High School I went to had bomb threats almost every other day. At first they herded the students outside and cleared the building. Then they cleared the gym (because the neighbors noticed and they didn't want to look bad) and herded everyone into the gym. It dawned on a few of us that one well hidden bomb in the gym (or on the roof) and we'd all be toast, so we managed to bug out more often than not. That was in the 1970s, in the good old USA.

No bombs, incidentally, just manipulation and disruption.

I'm no terrorist and have no aspirations to be one, but with the invasion being brought to our shores, it is up to us to be aware, and to have some idea of what might be what--especially if we are to be entrusted with the safety of others.

It is a good thing the teacher erred on the side of safety. A bad thing that Ahmed (like Jeff Dunham's "dead terrorist"?) possibly manipulated the teacher and the system, and just as bad that the system could be manipulated so easily.
