I used to be an avid Thomas Sowell reader, but of late, it's clear that he's jumped the shark. I'm posting this article, suggesting that you DON'T read more than a few paragraphs. The man is totally, totally clueless of what is going on in this country. I'm not talking conservatives, I'm talking with everyone... from all backgrounds.

Yes, Mr. Sowell, we are emotional. This is our country. We are Americans and proud of it, and I guarantee you there many many people living here, from families that came here generations ago, that do not want to see any more illegals, and yes... yes.. Mr. Sowell, they want a wall built, and they want to make this country great again.

So, keep writing your articles...that make absolutely no sense to me. Yes, we have other candidates out there, but they say nothing, and do nothing.

Did he feel this way back in 2008? Because that’s exactly what the voting public did and how we ended up with the debacle we have now.

A Dallas area political reporter summed up the Trump campaign last night after his report on the Trump rally. He called it “Hope and Change 2.0” Basically, an empty slogan with not many ideas discussed.

“Yes, Mr. Sowell, we are emotional.”

The argument that “your candidate’s supporters are emotional” is so stupid, stupid, stupid.
ALL partisans have emotional reasons for supporting their candidate- and the leading candidate, by definition, has the most emotion-based support.

NRO must have a quota for irrational anti-Trump articles.

The sign of insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over again and expecting a different outcome. So, how many more times are we to elect a professional politician with very little if any real world experience and then expect a change in Big Government?

The fundamental error that Dr. Sowell is making here is this. He is correct about the appeal of Hitler, Peron & Obama. But he totally misses the point, why many would rally to someone who is showing the ability to counter the mob appealing demagogues, with charisma of his own. It is not the charismatic that is evil, it is the misuse of charisma to destroy a people's heritage.

What Trump is rallying is the desire to fight back against the demagogues who are destroying our heritage. Why tie our hands by automatically rejecting someone who shows he knows how to fight back? Trump is talking about restoring traditional America, Hitler, Peron & Obama were preaching "new orders."

Here is my piece on Obama's adoption of Hitlerian tactics, which includes not only what he was doing, but to what purpose he was doing it--an absolutely essential distinction, that Dr. Sowell ignores. (Leftwing Chickens Coming Home.)

The actual track record of crowd-pleasers, whether Juan Peron in Argentina, Obama in America, or Hitler in Germany, is very sobering, if not painfully depressing.

Agree with your comment but think that Cruz is rock solid and will be rock solid.

An election is not a popularity contest, or an award for showmanship

If Sowell wishes to say that in a perfect world it shouldn't be a popularity contest for showboaters, I would agree. If Sowell really thinks that in reality elections aren't all about image and showmanship, then he's incredibly and intentionally naive.

It usually takes a great deal of egotism and vanity just to want to run for President or any other high public office. Within those unfortunate parameters, we're stuck picking the ones that happen to agree with us on some issues.

Dear Uncle Tom,
Sometimes it just takes extreme idealism to move the pendulum.
I see only two guys whom I feel want to really move it.
Cruz and Trump. All the others are just status quot.
I am a Christian Constitutional Conservative, and
While I hate the word feel.....It's Ted Cruz or ‘Wrecking ball’ Trump for me.
I really like the nickname ‘Wrecking Ball’.

“The ultimate danger lies in the voting public themselves. All too many signs point to an electorate including many people who are grossly uninformed or, worse yet, misinformed.”

He’s right on this one. Some of the morons who voted for Obama can’t even read cursive-—or maybe anything in English.

Is stupidity an emotion? Because I swear that’s the reason why some people vote for the candidates that they do.

Good grief.....Conservatives CAN disagree with other Conservatives! Since when is this not allowed?

Right now the base is divided. Some believe (and have for years now) that the GOP is dead, and are looking for a new road to take. And some are still hanging on to the hope that they can change the party from within.

Totally predictable and foreseeable. The Republican Party is getting the retribution it so richly deserves.

Their treatment of the Tea Party, Palin, etc, was/is unforgivable for many.

Paybacks are a bi*ch....and cannot be controlled...even by much loved intellectuals writing essays.

Are candidate “choices” acted like the last 7 years didn’t even happened??? They were business as usual. They didn’t rock the boat. They didn’t MAD???
I mean if i were running for President at this time in our history..I would be MAD at the very least.
I would have a bold, innovative plan to try to SAVE America?
Something to set me apart from business as usual.
That is unless i was just another self serving politician who is otherwise powerless to do anything but go along???

Sowell is correct early and often for conservatives. This has not changed. I understand why Trump is hitting such a nerve with the silent majority. He has earned it. But do you really think Trump is the right guy to carry the weight to get our country back to a strong and supported constitution? It is not just our country, but our culture that is on the brink. We need a conservative to rise to the top.

Actually, this is an excellent piece from one of the foremost conservative thinkers of our age.

If you’re going to seriously suggest on this site that Thomas Sowell isn’t conservative enough, then none of us can help you.
