One really does not expect this sort of thing at Baruch college, it’s the Business College of City U. of NY.

My mother worked there for years, my brother graduated from there, they don’t even have a campus.

This story is just shocking to me, poor fellow, may he rest in peace and may those who tormented him get the justice they deserve.

Hazing is not good but lugging a 20lb pack for some one that young should not be that hard of a thing to do.

Us backpackers lug a lot more than that and call it fun.

“... should not be that hard of a thing to do...”

Doing it while unconscious is probably a bit hard... don’t you think?

Perhaps. It is a time honored practice used in the miltary, sports teams etc.

It is designed to elicit a strong loyalty response and generally accomplishes that although it can go to far and be dangerous as in this case.

Carrying 20lbs blindfolded, without sunlight in the woods, tripping on ‘schrooms, and getting whack with a paddle every so often is a lot different than “lugging” a 20lb pack.

What a bunch of f#cking idiots! They could have at least called 911 when he was knocked out, instead they research his symptoms online while he slowly dies.

When I posted, I was thinking of mt military experience and how I conformed to the military because of it

In 1965, I had every reason to believe I'd go to Viet Nam and being loyal and disciplined was actually a desired trait for THIS middle class, too smart for his own good 17 year old.

Greek kids in school should never have that form of loyalty and discipline as part of their psyche ....

for what?

To become lemming democrats ??

However, walking with extra weight while blindfolded isn’t a terribly good idea.

With all due respect I was in a frat in the 80s and I’m to the right of Ghengas Khan.

“hazing is a stupid practice”

Instead of colleges teaching children to become mature, responsible adults, they teach them how to behave badly and regress into their childish instincts.

Agree with you that this is not what we have come to expect from Baruch, where the alumni have gone on to achieve many things.
