“Orcas is right!”
Wow; this kayaker better not see your picture!
It would inflate its air bladder to surface once injured, wouldn’t it? Then try to swim up?
The fish doesn’t have to be swallowed whole....only the Sensor needs to be swallowed whole.
Well, they would if they were bony fish and had air bladders, but sharks have zero bones (except what they’ve swallowed!) and zero air bladders. If they’re not moving, they sink.

Yeah, forgot about the sink or swim... hmmmm.. article says it was probably just a bigger great white - 16 ft - which doesn’t sound big enough, I’d think a 25-fter would be called for here.
Ask Giorgio.
This at least would explain the sudden change in temperature.
The article suggested the shark was swallowed whole, or transported intact very rapidly to great depth where it was eaten.
My understanding is that killer whales do not dive anywhere near the depth cited. Sperm whales do. Something the size of a sperm whale might be able to rapidly descend with its jaws locked onto a 9 foot shark which it would later swallow whole.
My guess is that the shark was diced and sliced at a shallower depth by one or more sharks. A chunk containing the tag was swallowed at which point the swallower headed for deeper, safer water to rest and digest the meal.
Whatever it was, it had to be big enough to swallow almost 10 feet of apex predator, and quick enough to drag it almost 2,000 feet in a few seconds.

“The skeleton of the shark has evolved and adapted to suit and aid the habitat, migration, hunting habits and diet of these acclaimed carnivores. Unlike terrestrial animals, humans, and even other marine animals, sharks skeletons are made purely of cartilage and connective tissue, or muscle. There is no bone.
This type of skeleton means that the shark is lighter, as cartilage is about half the density of bone. This is important because, unlike other fish, the shark has no swim bladder to prevent it from sinking to the bottom of the ocean.”

“There’s always a bigger fish.”

You can always be in before something.
Correct and I suspect the slicing and tearing was done by other sharks at a relatively shallow depth. Once a chunk containing the tag was torn free, the feeding shark then headed for the relative safety of the deep to digest the meal.
It’s fukushima radiation causing sea monsters.
Moskstraumen?
I watched a video of a Killer Whale just eviscerating a large Great White. Like childs play.
You could accurately say that he and Orcas shared the same marketplace during his 35-plus year career. If anybody would know the critters on a material plane where any number of animals bigger than you could eat you the instant they desired, it would be him. So I've had an interest in Killer Whales ever since.
Another thing, just a possibility to ponder — if they assume the temperature “change” was because of mammalian body heat, maybe the change had to do with some undersea volcanic vents or something. You never know — the ocean is pretty mysterious. I think most likely some ancient critter still exists in the depths.
