HAMMOND, Ind. - A federal jury has convicted a northwestern Indiana mayor and his wife of wire fraud and other charges for improperly using funds from his campaign and his city's food pantry.
The jury deliberated five hours Friday before finding Lake Station Mayor Keith Soderquist and his wife, Deborah Soderquist, guilty of conspiracy, seven counts of wire fraud and three counts of filing false income tax returns.

Yup...A Democrat
Stole money from food pantries to gamble with.
Pretty pathetic. But Lake Station is kind of a cool name for a town.
Not surprised, if it was a Republican it would be mentioned after their name.
Yup, that lack of a party affiliation in the first paragraph is conclusive evidence of the party.
And I bet their crimes are nothing compared to some on the Hill if they were scrutinized.
Actually, it would be mentioned in the headline, before their names..
Does it really matter (legally speaking) if this was a result of a ‘witch hunt’ or not?
There is proof of violating the law, not to mention violating the trust of the city, and the moral and ethical implications of it all.
OKAY KIDS! READY? Time to play Name That Party! If it’s not in the first sentence, the indicted/convicted/disgraced politician is a Democrat.
Recent name change. Before 1977, it was East Gary. Curiously, however, it only has a Black population of less than 4% (67% White, 28% Hispanic).
Here in NJ we had East Paterson change its name to Elmwood Park and West Paterson to Woodland Park; same initials, different image...
Up in Michigan, they changed one from East Detroit to Eastpointe. They’ll probably change it back in another 10 years (in the ‘70s-’90s, it was almost 100% White with about 45-35k Whites; 2000 it was 92%; in 2010, it was just 64% White (down to only 22k Whites) and jumped to 30% Black, in 2020 it will probably be majority Black).
Freepers know everything! Thanks!
Yes it matters. Because the law is selectively enforced. Do what you’re told and you’ll be fine.
Hammond is the home town of the late great Jean Shepherd
The point of my question was that it makes no difference the motivation of the investigation. If the public official embezzled, (s)he should pay the price.
This is not a 4A issue.
One could argue correctly that a ‘witch hunt’ is unethical or improper. But that is not what I’m talking about.
Same idea is conveyed as a horse head in your bed.
I wouldn’t be surprised if blacks oppose changing it back; here in NJ a group of them resisting naming a street for Martin Luther King because they knew what effect that h ad on peoples’ impressions of an area...
Heaven forbid they name a street after a Black person not named MLK Jr or Rosa Parks. My city insisted on naming a major thoroughfare for Parks despite having absolutely no connection to our city. Why not name it after a Black Conservative ? How about Zora Neale Hurston Boulevard ? The actress who played “Mama” on “What’s Happening” was a Black GOP activist, Mabel King. Name a street after her.
MLK might be the most over-honored SOB in history.
In 4th grade I did my BHM paper on Crispus Attucks. I picked him cause he was the earliest one of the list of choices.
