Linking the defunding of Planned Parenthood to a government funding bill is "an exercise in futility," according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The Kentucky Republican lawmaker, in an interview with Politico Friday, says he'll support instead a plan to fund the government into December with no conditions.
"It's an exercise in futility," McConnell says of the Planned Parenthood defunding effort. "I'm anxious to defund Planned Parenthood" but "the honest answer of that is that's not going to happen until you have a president who has a similar view."
"It's better to be honest with the American people and say, 'That won't get it done.'"
According to Politico, McConnell favors a strategy that will include a short-term funding bill to buy time to negotiate a longer-term spending measure and separately, a vote this month to federally ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
GOP lawmakers have called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood in the wake of hidden-camera videos showing officials brokering the distribution of fetal tissue to medical research.
But McConnell said either a Democratic minority would block the effort, or President Barack Obama would veto a bill even if it passed the Senate.
"Groups who deeply are concerned about the issue realize this [Planned Parenthood strategy] isn't going to get that done," McConnell said.
"What we are going to do is move to the pain-capable [abortion] bill sometime this month and see how people feel about that," he said referring to a 20-week abortion ban proposal.

Vote for defunding anyway.
Vote down the Iran deal anyway.
Keep trying to repeal Obamacare anyway.
Make Obama veto and make Dhimmicraps support his veto — then tie it around their necks and kill off what’s left of their political viability.
Everything is an exercise in futility with this tired old bastard.
We The People should demand this slime be replaced.
Republicans:
their only principle is to have no principles.
Their only strategy is preemptive surrender.
Their only plan for victory is to tick off their base as much as possible.
Dammit! Make the Klown veto it!
Investors Business Daily writes:
“It is beyond disgraceful that Senate Democrats would prevent a vote on one of the most consequential nuclear weapons agreements in history and do so after having formally agreed to a tally of every senator and congressman.
“But this is a party of street fighters, doing anything it takes to get power and expand government. Their GOP opponents all too often do battle according to Miss Manners’ rules for hosting an afternoon tea.
“Americans by a significant margin oppose Obama’s nuclear capitulation to Iran. The GOP is in the majority in both houses. Yet the Stupid Party still gets snookered.”
if the situation was reversed and the Democrats held the same numbers the Republicans hold now, I can guarantee they would get the job done. It seems the Republican do not know their job as Senators. Too many cocktail parties with lobbyists. They are “do nothings.”

A turtle says “I can’t.”
Supporting the RNC or establishment candidates is also an exercise in futility.
Put it backwards.
If it were not funded and the liberals wanted it funded, would they accept Obama saying “listen, i know what you want and I want it too but until we have a congress that agrees it’s just not going to happen”
Of course they wouldn’t.
DC is like high-school;
The Republicans are like the band geeks, and the Dems are the football letterman-jacket guys.
Our guys fly off to DC and they see all the hangers-on of the Dem party, and all the cheerleaders want to hump them.
Our guys are playing Dungeons and Dragons, hearing all the luscious stories, and pretty soon they start begging, simply to be TOLERATED for a short while, as they sit at the Cool Kid Table for 15 minutes.
THAT is Mitch and Boner —embarassed for the Letterman jacket guys to be reminded that it’s US that they were sent to DC by.
They’re ASHAMED of us and they only want for the DC Establishment to like them, tolerate them.
It’s sad, and it’s sick.
Then it’s time for McConnell to go or a real Conservative Party emerges.
The most obvious reason why they don’t have those votes is their backers/handlers/lobbyists don’t want want them to.
A turtle crossing a road is futile too. But at least they try.
What an idiot. Doesn’t he realize that he could have it both ways. Continue funding PP, which he apparently favors, and forcing omuzzie to veto it which would at least look like he wants to follow the wishes of his constituents.
Or is he really so lazy that he doesn’t even want to deal with the “paperwork” involved? Some leader. Thanks Kentucky.
Mitch McConnell is An Exercise in Futility
Everyone here is screaming about ‘Principles”. Well I would point out the following.
For the last few elections, several of us tried futile to get Freepers and the greater right wing to stand on principles. And we were told ny a fair number of Freepers that principle was the problem, called Kamakazi Conservatives and many, many far less flattering names.
Further, I would point out that we tried futilely to get people to NOT re-elect/support Bhoner and mitch and were told the above amidst demands for pragmatism.
Folks, the enemy isn’t Mitch. It’s your fellow ‘pragmatists’. And until you join those of us in fighting for what we believe in, actively, they will ensure their pragmatic lesser evils continue to fund the killing of children, the destruction of marriage and the nuclear arming of more muslim states. The enemy is within.
It’s that simple. If you cannot do that much, don’t expect this to change.
