adical leftwinger Jeremy Corbyn on Saturday won the crown of Britain's main opposition Labour party in a landslide victory, becoming the nation's most left-wing political leader for over 30 years.
The 66-year-old socialist, whose policies have been compared to those of Greece's Syriza and Spain's Podemos, was named leader after clinching 59.5 percent of the 422,664 votes cast by Labour party members and supporters.
The newly-elected leader condemned "grotesque levels of inequality" and "an unfair welfare system" in his victory speech to party members in central London.
The veteran campaigner also called for Britain's Conservative government to show more "compassion" in dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis and said he would attend a demonstration planned in London later on Saturday.
He said Labour was "united and absolutely determined in our quest for a decent and better society that is possible for all".
North Islington MP Corbyn has electrified Labour's leadership race, which was triggered by the resignation of Ed Miliband after he lost May's general election to David Cameron's right-wing pro-austerity Conservatives.

Whether people care who the Speaker is or not (they don’t), it is a powerful position that has influence in the direction we travel. It is almost worse that people don’t care. They should have cared. It is not JUST Pelosi or even mostly Pelosi to blame for our march leftward. My point is that it did not do what pundits claimed. It did not expose the left as a bunch of radicals that the public would reject. It marketed radicalism to the public and they bought it. IF they had been paying attention and cared, it could have peen stopped each place it cropped up, including the position of Speaker of the House.
Exactly. I guess so what if the candy is stolen.
And though he'd be a disaster for Britain, he might be quite good for the Labour party. He'll shake them up, and they certainly need that after a succession of bland leaders led to that general election debacle. And if you think about it, if anyone can get those Scottish seats back, its him.
Will he win those Labour seats back? Almost half of Half of Scotland seems like it is Hell bent on secession, and the SNP is the new establishment party and tactical vote against the SNP. I think on the other hand, he may split the leftist vote somewhat and lead to a Tory revival there, and the lib dems may undergo a sudden revival in fortunes as the saner centre left alternative.
Tactical vote against the Tories I mean.
England has decided they want to beat America on the road to ruin and discontent.
I dont know if he can win the labour seats in Scotland back, I just think he’s got more chance than any of the other contenders. Personally, I’d back his brand of leftist insanity over the progressive jacobite version gathering its strength north of the border...
Brittania used to Rule the Waves. Now it’s sinking under the sea.
Resigned during Corbyn's acceptance speech. Really meant it.
DO read what the Brits here are saying.
Except this man will never come close to being elected.
