My daughter occasionally mentions wanting to do overseas charitable work when she’s older. Partly because she loves foreign languages and partly because the popular kids at her school talks about doing the same.
This young woman’s story is one I tell her as a warning. With the following advice:
Your life is more valuable than those you are trying to help. Especially since a lot of those you want to help will despise you for being an American, a Christian, and a Westernized woman and will see you as their enemy.
Never go anywhere where this sort of thing regularly happens.
Always assume that anywhere you go is a place where it could happen.
If you arent allowed to protect yourself by being armed, don’t go.
If you are allowed to be armed, always remember to save the last bullet for yourself.
Now a lot of that is pure hyperbole. But it’s meant to get her thinking about things like risk, risk mitigation, safety and the irreversable consequences of poor judgement and bad decisions.
