OTTAWA -- Conservative Leader Stephen Harper cited security concerns on Tuesday for his refusal to commit to doing more to help refugees from the Middle East.
As provinces pledged their own funds to help alleviate the crisis, Harper deflected a question about whether he would send more staff to the region to help an already over-stretched bureaucracy.
Security is paramount and every potential refugee needs careful screening, Harper said.
"We cannot open the floodgates and airlift tens of thousands of refugees out of a terrorist war zone without proper process," Harper said in a Facebook question and answer session. "That is too great a risk for Canada."
Screening refugees is partially done through data such as digital photographs, fingerprints and other biometric data. Visa officers in Beirut began using biometrics in November 2014 but struggled to get going, according to documents obtained under Access to Information....

“EU should ‘undermine national homogeneity’ says UN migration chief”
I want a summer home in Alberta, which I know is off topic. Albertans voted in a far left leaning party. And have heard horrific things about the health care. Do Conservatives there stand a chance in the next election? Assuming you keep up with the politics.
I want the UN destroyed, their building in NYC destroyed, all our agreements abolished. Communism is pure evil; the devils work.
Wouldn’t stop this guy.
Do a search on what he’s involved with. Hint: It’s not just the UN...
OTOH, just to show they care, they could accept a limited number of them, place them in one of those towns way up north where the sun barely gets above the horizon, where the polar bears roam the streets all night long looking for something to eat.
It’s the same crisis that sunk civilizations thruout history. The have-nots swarm in and take from the haves.
I had a girlfriend move there, Australia, this spring, their winter. She became pregnant with twins and suffered from the COLD (and they were from NYC!). She said that their apartment lacked central heat. They came back and had to buy the things they sold.
So, they learned it was expensive and not quite what they expected, but they had the characteristics you described, he a finance guy, she a teacher.
I am researching places for expats and that came up between my husband and myself, but we don’t fit the demographics. Fine, their country, they make the rules.
Great! Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres is a former president of the Socialist International. And he was prime minister of Portugal.
(Personal note, my husband wants me to look into living abroad in Portugal.) I feel blocked in by rogues and cut-throats!
You are right. I have read the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. We are following their pattern.
Why are no muslim countries being demanded to take in the bulk of these refugees, who would fit right into their countries?
Good luck taking your guns and keeping them.
Is he available for ‘16?
It can be difficult to get into some of the Commonwealth nations. Costa Rica is popular. Have a friend who is retiring down there in several years.
Never said I was going there.....
Costa Rica, I heard, is kind of dicey these days. I’ve heard about bad infrastructure and resentment towards Americans, i.e., crimne. I am happy to be wrong about that. I hope your friend has gotten good information.
Here’s an article I found on nearby Nicaragua. Please pass it on to him. ( I get Google alerts on living abroad in Central America .)
Now I know it is difficult to get into the commonwealth nations. Good for them. Oh, wait, except for that Muslim thing...
I’m still here, but I’m not Canadian, I’m Albertan. Don’t get me started on the damn ndp though.
I’ve been busy still. I had to cancel my vacations this year.
This fall election is quite important though.
I also love my real American neighbors, not the ones who made this downfall possible.
Thanks. He has family down there, so I suspect he will be going down there regardless. Parts of eastern Europe are still sane.
Alberta voted 38% left, 62% right. It’s still conservative, but the vote was split. we’ll have a vote of no confidence soon.
I’m cool with you Bulwyf but it would be cooler if you were a western separatist like me :)
I’ve been a western separatist since 2002 heh. I’m all for it. I’m tired of giving my money away to the lazy left infested east.
