President Obamas Iran nuclear deal on Sunday got some largely unexpected support -- from former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
The deal, which is expected to receive a vote this week in the Republican-led Congress, has essentially no other GOP support.
Still, Obama late last week secured enough support from Senate Democrats to ultimately complete the deal, despite the Republican opposition.
Powell, who served in the Republican administration of President George W. Bush, said on NBCs Meet the Press that the international agreement is "a pretty good deal" that would reduce the threat of Iran gaining a nuclear weapon.
Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, joins about half of the roughly two-dozen congressional Jewish lawmakers in supporting the deal, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly opposes.
New York Sen. Charles Schumer, expected to be the next Senate Democratic leader, is among a handful in that group who opposes the deal. And his decision in early August was among the first.
Powell said Sunday that Iran's nuclear program "has been thrown into a detour," decreasing the likelihood that it can produce a nuclear weapon to be used against Israel or other countries.
"So that's pretty good," he said.
The international deal would lift billions of dollars in crippling economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for the rogue nation curtailing its nuclear development program.

Other than Obama, has anyone ever got more mileage out of being black than Colin Powell? After Gulf War #1, the nation was celebrating. The media felt a strong need to create a black superhero for the celebration. It's been downhill ever since for their superhero.
Remember the days, ten years ago now, when Colon Bowell could do no wrong and anyone who pointed out the truth was screamed off FR with “racist” and “bigot” attached to them?
Poor Colon Powell, still trying to become relevant after all these years of irrelevancy...
Powell is a disgrace.
We stopped listening to you a long, long time ago. How did you get to be anything higher than a Private?
Remember the days, ten years ago now, when Colon Bowell could do no wrong and anyone who pointed out the truth was screamed off FR with racist and bigot attached to them?
He was against so many of the things that made us successful in Gulf War #1. That didn’t matter. The media needed their black superhero for the celebration.
It was transparent to me when it was happening what the media was doing. They got themselves a black superhero.
Powell is supporting his bro
Because advancing 150 billion dollars to an unrepentant, sworn enemy, begging for good behavior, is sound foreign policy. I’m so glad there are smart people like them to figure this out for me. What I see is a massive train wreck, but my simple mind must be deceiving me.
Gen. Powell should change the spelling of his name to Colon, cause he’s really turning out to be an a-hole.
Yep, we’re nearing an election so it’s time for the MSM to trot out Colin Powell again.
Is that the same Colin Powell that despises America and has sold his soul to the NWO?
And none of that ultimately mattered - he was still called "uncle tom" and "race traitor", the color card didn't protect him.
Even his swinging Left didn't save him...
I guess it must be a good deal for Chia Pets.
Yep. Putin and the Iranians have to be laughing so hard that Obama and Kerry.
Obama and Kerry came to Iran BEGGING for a deal. Iran got everything they wanted. They even got protection that allows them to further develop nuclear weapons.
They may be laughing at their stupidity, but all of them are basically in this together. All seek the same basic new world order goals: weaker America, stronger Russia and China.
Colin Powell now holds the views of the mainstream Democrat. He was never a Republican or a conservative.
How is that "largely unexpected"?
Seriously. When has Greasy Debbie ever opposed Barry Hussein?
When has Colin Powell (the politician) ever been anything other than a weak appeaser?
Unexpected?
Baloney!
