LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A defiant county clerk in Kentucky is willing to stay in jail for her beliefs, but she would prefer to be a free woman.
Attorneys for Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis have officially appealed a judge's decision to put her in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The three-page motion doesn't include arguments as to why Davis should be released but amends Davis' earlier appeal of the judge's order.
Davis objects to same-sex marriage for religious reasons. U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered her to issue the licenses and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his order.

But Davis still refused to do it, saying she could not betray her conscience. Bunning then put her in jail for refusing to obey his order.
On Monday, Attorney General Jack Conway, who is also running for Kentucky Governor, said he has sympathy for the Rowan County Clerk.
"She's obviously in a heartfelt position right now," said Conway. "She is not in jail for religious beliefs, she's in jail because she defied a federal judge's court order. We are a nation of laws and the rule of law has to prevail."
U.S. District Judge David Bunning said Davis would remain behind bars until she complies. Her deputy clerks started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples on Friday. Davis' lawyers say the marriage licenses issued in her absence are not valid without her signature.

She should. Then they should have a special election to fill the county clerk position and re-elect her. Make the sons of gun arrest her again. Make it as expensive and as much trouble as possible for the state and the government to make her go away.
The local KY media is covering some of the deeper nuances of this situation pretty well.
The Attorney General, a Democrat running for Governor, is pretty scared and maintaining his distance.
The Speaker of the Legislature, a Democrat, is scared and publically on his knees asking the Governor, also a Democrat, to hold a special session to create protections for Davis.
The Governor, a Democrat who is term limited but wants a new role in national Democratic politics, is refusing to call the special session and is “demanding” (somewhat quietly) that Davis issue the licenses.
In what way? He’s the liberal Democrat AG running against Republican Matt Bevin for Governor.
They apparently are - and where her county is located, there are quite a few other clerks offices in closed proximity. So all of these news stories about her supposedly putting people’s lives on hold are false as they could have easily, and immediately, gotten the licenses. They were simply bent on getting her personally to issue the licenses for some reason.
My mistake. I thought that he was GOP-E. Hard to tell these days.
Ain’t it, though ?
Yes, it is attributed to both men with perhaps a little different wording.
There being other clerks is besides the point. Just like there are other bakers, photographers, etc. The homos target people they know will react negatively against them. Look at all the drama that has ensued.
Wow, some people really need to wipe the blood out of their eyes.
