At some point the war starts

It's already started. Historians in the future (if there is a future) will argue about what was the opening volley. I would submit that it's the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

“I would submit that it’s the toppling of Saddam Hussein.”

Nope.

The rise of the Iranian Theocracy under Jimmy Carter.

I know I'll get into trouble for this, but I think it was a mistake for us to topple Saddam Hussein. If we had to do it, we should have stayed there to "nation build" (as much as I'm against nation building, but in this case, we broke it, we have to fix it) like we did after World War II. Still, leaving Saddam there would have been the best option as a check against Iran. Saddam would be 80 this year, he mostl ikely would still be around but if not, perhaps his second son would have taken over. We should have left Kadaffy alone. It is a sad fact but true, those people over there need a strong man to keep order.

I think toppling Hussein is a good starting point for the current things going on but you can say it started a lot earlier. Some scholars say 1979 with the ouster of the Shah in Iran. Some go back to 1972 with Munich or 1968 when Sirhan Sirhan shot RFK. Soe even take it to 1947/48 when Israel was founded or 1919 when World War I ended and the Europeans drew artificial borders in the Middle East. I guess you can go back to the beginnings in the days of Mohammed.

Anyhoo, we will have to fight them at some point, the bad side, the longer it takes the Western World to come to their senses, the worse it will be.
